Box and Whisker Plot A box and whisker plot is a graph that displays the highest and lowest quarters of data as whiskers, the middle two quarters of the data and the median.

Box and Whisker Plot

13
Constructing a Box and Whisker Plot Step 1: Find the lower and upper extremes, the median, and the first and third quartiles

14
Lets try it… This data tells the distance it takes for cars to stop at a red light. VehicleStopping Distance (ft) A120 B158 C142 D131 E128 F167 G136

15
Identify the Lower and Upper Extremes 120, 128, 131, 136, 142, 158, 167 Find the median and the first and third quartile

16
Find the First and Third Quartile

17
Constructing a Box and Whisker Plot Step 2: Draw a number line. Above the number line plot points representing the lower and upper extremes, the median and the first and third quartiles

19
Constructing a Box and Whisker Plot Step 3: Draw a box through the first and third quartiles. Inside the box, draw a vertical line through the median. Then draw lines from the first and third quartiles to the extremes. These lines are called the whiskers.

20
Make the box, mark the median, draw the whiskers.
