Tuesday, 9/3 Objectives: How can you create rhythm and unity in a series of collages? Goal: Create a series of collages that exhibit rhythm and unity using a variety of two-dimensional media. 1.What is today’s objective? 2.What are you going to be doing in class today? 3.Do you already have ten points today? How?

Wednesday, 9/4 Objectives: How can you create rhythm and unity in a series of collages? Goal: Create a series of collages that exhibit rhythm and unity using a variety of two-dimensional media. NO Drill

Notes Two-dimensional art: art that is flat such as drawings, paintings and prints Adhesives: substances, like glues, pastes or cements, which cause adhesion, or stickiness. (adhere: to stick securely) Collage: a picture or design created by adhering flat materials like newspaper, wallpaper, printed text and illustrations, photographs, cloth, string, etc., to a flat surface Rhythm: A visual tempo or beat. The principle of design that refers to the repetition of elements of art to produce the look and feel of movement. It is often achieved through the careful placement of repeated components which invite the viewer's eye to jump rapidly or glide smoothly from one to the next.

Rhythm and Repetition

Printed Numbers on Mixed Media Backgrounds

To Do Create two collages: 1.The first with papers found in magazines. - While you are looking for images look for ones that have similar colors and rhythmic images. - As you are cutting and gluing them down think of how you are arranging them to create a rhythm. 2. For the second collage use overlapping tissue paper. - Think how your colors work together with the colors of your first collage though they do not have to be the same. - Think of how you are cutting and arranging the papers to create rhythm and how the rhythm of the first collage work with the rhythm of the first. All papers must be fully glued down. All papers must sit flat enough on the paper that you can easily draw over them.

Clean up Make sure your name is on the back of both your papers written big and with a pen. Place your work on the drying rack. Put brushes back in the cups. Put all trash in the trash bins. Clean your tables

Exit Ticket How can you create rhythm and unity in a series of collages?

Wednesday, 9/4 Objective: How can you create a sense of unity in a series of collages? Goal: Create a series of collages that exhibit rhythm and unity using a variety of two-dimensional media. Drill 1.Substances, like glues, pastes or cements are known as ________. 2. An image created by adhering flat materials like different kinds of papers to a flat surface is known as a ______. 3. The principle of design that refers to the repetition of art elements, also known as beats, to produce the look and feel of movement is ___ 4. What are the different beats in the work on the right? 5. What were the two requirements for yesterday’s collages?

Thusday, 9/5 Objective: How can you create a sense of unity in a series of collages? Goal: Create a series of collages that exhibit rhythm and unity using a variety of two-dimensional media. Drill 1.Substances, like glues, pastes or cements are known as ________. 2. An image created by adhering flat materials like different kinds of papers to a flat surface is known as a ______. 3. The principle of design that refers to the repetition of art elements, also known as beats, to produce the look and feel of movement is ___ 4. What are the different beats in the work on the right? 5. What were the two requirements for yesterday’s collages?

Notes Unity: The sense of wholeness or oneness that is achieved through the effective use of art elements in a composition. A composition is unified when the relationships between its parts interact to create a sense of coherence.

Study the work below. What makes the different parts of the composition appear unified (like a coherent piece)?

To Do Finish yesterday’s collage if you have not already done so. You need to use images that exhibit rhythm and arrange them in a way that creates rhythm. Create a second collage on a different piece of paper using only tissue paper. - overlap the tissue paper - include elements that are going to unify the tissue paper collage to the magazine collage you already have. - create a rhythm in the way you arrange the paper

Exit Ticket How can you create a sense of unity in a series of collages?

Thursday, 9/12 Objective: What are two ways to create emphasis in a composition? Goal: Create a collage that exhibits rhythm and emphasis using a variety of two-dimensional media. 1.The sense of wholeness or oneness that is achieved through the effective use of art elements in a composition is called ____. 2.Purposeful repetition of art elements in a composition will result in a _____. 3.Name four materials that can be used in a collage. 4.How is rhythm created in the work on the right? 5.What unifies different parts of the composition on the right? Drill

Notes Emphasis: purposeful use of art elements to single out, stress or direct attention to a part of the composition known as the Focal Point. Emphasis is one of the principles of design. A design lacking emphasis may result in monotony.

Lines and beats directing the eye

Color/Framing

?

To Do You should have completed: Collage 1: magazine images arranged in a rhythmic pattern. Collage 2: tissue paper arranged in a way that unifies the composition with the first collage Collage 3: Create a third collage using magazines and possibly tissue paper arranged in a way that creates emphasis through a focal point in the composition. Use whole cutout images in the composition. In creating the focal point pay attention to: - Size - rhythm with beats that direct, or move the eye, towards the focal point. - color - direction of lines - “framing” the focal point

Exit Ticket What are two ways to create emphasis in a composition?

Monday, 9/9 Objective/Goal: Create a series of collages using a variety of two-dimensional media that are unified by common elements. Drill 1.A picture or design created by adhering flat materials like newspaper and photographs to a flat surface is called a __________. 2.The first collage you created had to have ____ and you were only allowed to use ____. 3.The second collage you create had to show ____ with the first and you were only allowed to use _____. 4.The third collage you created had to have and area ____. 5.What are two way that you can create emphasis in a work?

Notes Texture: An element of art that refers to the surface quality or "feel" of an object, its smoothness, roughness, softness, etc. Textures may be actual or simulated. Actual textures can be felt with the fingers, while simulated textures are suggested by an artist in the painting of different areas of a picture.

To Do: Complete six collaged surfaces as directed below. Collage 1: Select magazine pages that have a rhythmic pattern. Cut and rearrange the images on the page so they themselves create a rhythmic pattern. Collage two: Using only tissue paper create a collage that has elements that unify it to the first one. Collage three: Create a collage that has at least two cutout images from a magazine and emphasizes an area of the composition. Collage four: Create a collage using only newspaper scraps. Collage five: create a collage using a variety of materials that have different textures. Collage six: Create a collage using cut up plastic bags over images from magazine pages and other sources.

Exit Ticket How many collages have you completed so far? How many do you still have left to do?

Wednesday, 9/11 Objective: What is the difference between translucent and opaque materials? Goal: Create a series of collages using a variety of two- dimensional media that are unified by common elements. Drill 1.How many collages do you need to create for this assignment? 2.What materials do you have available for your collages? 3.What rule (design principle) do you need to follow for the first collage? 4.What rule did you have to follow for the second collage? 5.The element of art that refers to the surface quality or "feel" of an object is ___.

Notes Opaque: a material that does not allow light to pass through. You cannot see through it at all. Translucent: a material that allows some light to pass through. You can partially see through the object.

Collage five: create a collage using a variety of materials that have different textures. translucency Collage six: Create a collage using cut up plastic bags over images from magazine pages, tissue paper and other sources. Experiment with the translucency of your materials.

Thursday, 9/12 Objective/Goal: Create a series of collages based on design principles using a variety of two-dimensional media. Small group objective: Examine the role of positive and negative space in designing letter and number fonts. Drill 1.A material that does not allow light to pass through is called _____. 2.A material that allows some light to pass through is called ______. 3.The element of art that refers to how things feel is ____. 4.Name two materials that you can use for your collages that are translucent. 5.What do you need to do for the sixth collage?

What is up ahead: Today: finish collages/start creating letter stamps (small group) Friday: Journaling day Monday: work on creating letter stamps and applying gesso to collages Tuesday: unify all collages into one composition by drawing over them with different materials Wednesday: Print letters over collages Thursday: re-work compositions Monday: Cut up and re-arrange compositions on panels Tuesday: Put finishing touches

To Do Cut the strips of paper that describe each collage. Examine the collages you have so far. Glue the collage description that best fits each collage to the back of that paper. Determine which collages you still need to finish. If you have two or more collages left to finish use this day to finish all your collages. Materials are on your table or the front of the room. If you have only one collage left to finish or if you have completed all your collages we will meet at the front of the room in ten minutes to discuss the next step of the assignment. After you have finished labeling each collage, put the clip back on the pile and I will collect all your collages.

Collage five: create a collage using a variety of materials that have different textures. translucency Collage six: Create a collage using cut up plastic bags over images from magazine pages, tissue paper and other sources. Experiment with the translucency of your materials.

Exit Ticket Briefly describe what you worked on today.

Monday, 9/17 Objective: What is the role of positive and negative space in designing letter and number fonts. Goal: Design a letter and a number font to be used as a stamp taking positive and negative shape relationships into consideration. 1.So far this assignment has involved creating a series of _____ by gluing different materials on paper to create a composition. 2.Magazine, newspaper, tissue paper and handmade paper all feel different. They have a different _____. 3.Tissue paper and some plastic grocery bags allow some light to pass through. They are what we call ______ materials. 4.Glue, paste and tape help you stick things together. They are all called ______.

Notes Shape: an area enclosed within a boundary Positive space: The space in a composition that is taken up by something, such as lines, designs, colors or shapes. Negative space - Empty space in an artwork. Negative space often has its own shape. Gesso: plaster mixed with animal-hide glue and applied to a surface that is to be painted. Gesso is a primer and not a paint and prepares a surface to receive paint.

Demonstration Seeing letters as shapes. Starting with a large line letter and making it into a shape. Seeing positive and negative shapes. Altering the positive/negative space relationship by manipulating the letter lines. How to create a letter design. Transferring the design to foamies. Cutting the foam. Gluing it down on a second foam (black) to create the stamp. Taking the mirror effect into consideration.

To DO 1. Make sure your name is on all of your collages. 2. Apply a thin layer of gesso over all of your collages. You should be able to see the images and textures through the gesso. 3. you want to hide an image experiment with layers of gesso to increase its opacity. 4. Place your collages on the drying rack, or if they dry quickly hold them together with a paper clip. 5. Design a letter and a number taking positive/negative shape relationships into consideration. 6. Transfer your design to a white foamie and cut the letter out. 7. Glue the letter on a black piece of foamie taking into consideration the mirror effect.

Exit Ticket What is the role of positive and negative space in designing letter and number fonts that are to be used as stamps?

Tuesday, 9/17 Objective: When does variety lead to chaos and unity to monotony? Goal: Create variety and unity among all collages though the repetitive use of art elements using different drawing media. 1.The three design principles we have discussed so far are ___, ____ and ___. 2.The empty space in a composition is called ______. 3.An area enclosed by a boundary is considered a ____. 4.The space inside the letters you drew yesterday is considered ____ space. 5.How many negative shapes are there on the image on the right?

Tuesday, 9/17 Objective: Design a letter and a number font to be used as a stamp taking positive and negative shape relationships into consideration. 1.The three design principles we have discussed so far are ___, ____ and ___. 2.The empty space in a composition is called ______. 3.An area enclosed by a boundary is considered a ____. 4.The space inside the letters you drew is considered ____ space. 5.How many negative shapes are there on the image on the right?

To DO Design a letter and a number taking positive/negative shape relationships into consideration. 1.Trace the shape of the rectangle (frame) onto newsprint. 2. Within that frame design a letter or a number that has positive space and that touches the edges of the frame. 3. Transfer your design to a white foamie and cut the letter out. 4. Glue the letter on a black piece of foamie taking into consideration the mirror effect.

Monday, 9/23 Objective: When does variety lead to chaos and unity to monotony? Goal: Create variety and unity among all collages though the repetitive use of art elements using different drawing media. 1.A material used to create a piece of art is called a _____. 2.Name three drawing media. 3.When does a work of art have variety? 4.When does a work of art have monotony? 5.When does a work of art have a composition that appears chaotic?

Monday, 9/23 Objective: When does variety lead to chaos and unity to monotony? Goal: Create variety and unity among all collages though the repetitive use of art elements using different drawing media. 1.The two design principles we have discussed so far are ___ and ___. 2.The empty space in a composition is called ______. 3.An area enclosed by a boundary is considered a ____. 4.The space inside the letters you drew is considered ____ space.

Notes Medium: a material used to make art. (Plural: media) Commonly used DRAWING media: pencil, color pencil, markers, pens, charcoal, pastel, cray-pas, ink. Variety: A principle of design that uses diversity and change to increase the visual interest of the work. An artwork which makes use of many different colors, values, lines, textures, and shapes would reflect the artist's desire for variety. When there is too little variety, the result is monotony. When there is too much variety with no elements to unify a composition the result is chaos.

Demonstration Placing all collages on the table. Studying what is already there to identify interesting surfaces and textures created by the collaged materials. Exploring what different drawing media can do. Creating unity between all collages through the use of repetitive drawn elements in different media. Creating variety while maintaining the unity of the work. Avoiding monotony and chaos.

To Do: Make sure you have a layer of gesso on ALL your collages but especially on the ones with shinny, slippery surfaces. Lay all your collages out on the table so that you can see them all. Find areas of the collages that you might want to use as focal points, that you find interesting or whose shape you can use repetitively. Choose THREE colors to use. Take three different drawing media in the colors you chose. Use a repeated shape, line, color or arm movement on all collages: - Vary the size and/or direction. - Vary the drawing media used. - Try to overlay materials. - Observe how the same medium looks different or works different on the different textures you have in your collages. - Check your work for unity and variety (avoid monotony and chaos).

Exit Ticket When does variety lead to chaos and unity to monotony?

Thursday, 9/19 Objective: Describe the printmaking process. Goal: Use the printmaking process to print letters and numbers over the collages in a way that creates emphasis and contrast. Drill: 1.Which drawing medium, out of the ones you have been using, smudges very easily. 2. Why is it important that you have all your collages spread out in front of you if you are trying to unify them by drawing over them? 3. How can you unify all your collages?

Notes Printmaking: the process of transferring an image from one surface to another, usually multiple times. Printing Plate: the surface that contains the image to be transferred. Brayer: a roller used to spread printing ink on the ink plate and transfer it on the printing plate. Ink plate: the surface where ink is rolled. Contrast: A large difference between two things. Closely related to emphasis. A principle of design, that refers to the juxtaposing of elements of art to stress the differences between them.

Demonstration Setting up the space for printmaking Rolling ink on the ink plate. Transferring ink on the printing plate with a brayer. Choosing where to print and what color to print. Printing. Clean up

To Do Printmaking tables: purple, orange, pink - Print 3-4 letters/numbers on each collage paper. - Consider where you are placing the number/letter (what image or texture is underneath) - Consider how much contrast you are creating with your choice of color. “Collage Unification” tables: white, yellow - Lay all your collages in front of you. - Use line, color, pattern and texture to unify all your collages so that they appear as parts of one work. - Mix and overlap media. - Experiment.
