The governor of Virginia sent a small expedition under Washington (a young and headstrong Virginia militia officer) to get rid of the French. Washington and his men attacked a French party, killing its leader, which led to his men building a poorly built fort and a larger French force coming to enforce his surrender. This incident led to the expansion of the European Seven Years War to North America, also known as the French and Indian War.
