2. Read to Cure the “Summer Slide” Studies show that the effect of reading four to five books over the summer is enough to stop a decline in reading achievement from spring to fall. In a nutshell, if you don’t use it, you lose it. When school starts in the fall, students who don’t read over the summer “slide” backwards.

3. What should you do to be a part of the program? Read one book from your grade level list. You must complete activity A for that book. When school starts you will be participating in a collaborative class activity that focuses on the book you read. As you read, be able to: Describe how a character showed characteristics of a hero and explain why you chose what you did Activity A: Write one quote from the book that relates to the guiding statement above. Include the page number, and explain, in a short paragraph, why you chose that quote.

4. Can I Read Other Books? Of course! After you finish the required book, read as many books as you can, and read any book that interests you. You can complete other activities to earn other incentives. Or just read for fun!

6. The Port Chicago 50 by Steve Sheinkin  This book is an astonishing civil rights story from Newbery Honor winner and National Book Award finalist Steve Sheinkin. On July 17, 1944, a massive explosion rocked the segregated Navy base at Port Chicago, California, killing more than 300 sailors who were at the docks, critically injuring off-duty men in their bunks, and shattering windows up to a mile away. On August 9th, 244 men refused to go back to work until unsafe and unfair conditions at the docks were addressed. When the dust settled, fifty were charged with mutiny, facing decades in jail and even execution. 10. Counting by 7’s by Holly Goldberg Sloan  Willow Chance is a twelve-year-old genius, obsessed with nature and diagnosing medical conditions, who finds it comforting to count by 7s.
