CHALLENGE: WHAT STRUCTURES ARE FOUND IN PLANT CELLS? IN ANIMAL CELLS? WHAT DO CELLS DO?

Plant vs. Animal Cell GO TO sepuplhs.org/sgi CLICK ON “ACTIVITY LINKS” UNDER STUDENTS. FIND THE CELL BIOLOGY SECTION. GO TO THE “WHAT DO CELLS DO” ACTIVITY. YOUR TASK IS TO BUILD A TYPICAL ANIMAL CELL AND THEN A TYPICAL PLANT CELL. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS IN THE SIMULATION CAREFULLY. BE SURE TO READ THE DESCRIPTIONS FOR EACH CELL STRUCTURE!! WHEN YOU HAVE CORRECTLY COMPLETED THE TASK, YOU WILL GET A MESSAGE STATING THAT YOUR CELL IS COMPLETE.

PROCEDURE – Plant vs. Animal Cell FUNCTIONANIMAL CELLPLANT CELL MAKES AND MODIFIES “STUFF” FOR THE CELL Mitochondria (ATP) Ribosomes (proteins) Nucleolus (ribosome) Golgi apparatus (proteins and lipids) Endoplasmic reticulum Mitochondria (ATP) Ribosomes (proteins) Nucleolus (ribosome) Chloroplast (glucose) Golgi apparatus (proteins and lipids) Endoplasmic reticulum STORES “STUFF” FOR THE CELL (ex: DNA, water) Nucleus (DNA) Small vacuole Cell membrane Nucleus (DNA) Large vacuole Cell membrane Cell wall MOVES “STUFF” AROUND OR INTO AND OUT OF CELL Cell membrane Vessicles Endoplasmic Reticulum (lipids and proteins) Cytoskeleton Golgi Apparatus Cell membrane Vessicles Endoplasmic Reticulum (lipids and proteins) Cytoskeleton Golgi Apparatus SUPPORTS THE CELL Cytoskeleton Cell membrane Cytoplasm Cytoskeleton Cell membrane Cell wall Large vacuole Cytoplasm DEALS WITH ENERGYmitochondria Mitochondria Chloroplast BREAKS DOWN OR DIGESTS “STUFF” Mitochondria (glucose) Lysosome Small vacuole Mitochondria (glucose) Large vacuole

Plant and Animal Cells Animal Cell Plant Cell Cell wall Large Vacuole chloroplast Small vacuole lysosomes Ribosome Nucleus Endoplasmic reticulum Golgi apparatus Cell membrane Mitochondria Nucleolus Vesicles Cytoskeleton cytoplasm

Function Review OBTAIN THE LILAC HANDOUT. FILL IT OUT!! IF YOU PAID ATTENTION DURING THE SIMULATION, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO EASILY DO THIS. OTHERWISE, GO BACK AND USE THE SIMULATION TO GET INFORMATION FOR EACH CELL STRUCTURE. EXTRA CREDIT!!! MAKE YOUR OWN FLASH CARDS BASED UPON WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT CELLS (animal vs. plant cells; prokaryotic vs. eukaryotic, cell structures & functions)  Minimum of 12 QUALITY flash cards required for EC!!
