Digital Entertainment Scenarios (1) UPnP v1: UPnP allows a Control Point to discover a device on the network UPnP Print allows printing without a print driver. UPnP AV allows rich digital media i.e. Photos to be discovered and rendered. 1) Mobile Digital Entertainment Devices join network - -View, Edit, Print, & Store Photographs WiFi Camera Phone, PDA, Mobile Entertainment Card to TV

Digital Entertainment Scenarios (2) 2) Photos from PC to living room - -View, Store, and Print Media Server Media Renderer

Printer Device The PrintBasic:1 Service is mandatory in a Printer Device. PrintBasic:2 is optional.

PrintBasic:1 vs. PrintBasic:2 PrintBasic:1 enables printing from a control point to a UPnP Printer  Requires XHTML-Print Support for documents  Requires JPEG support for images PrintBasic:2 improves printing by providing the following features for photo printing:  Layout Features  Borderless Printing  Album Pages  Photos-up printing  Index Printing (rotation)  Text Superimposed on Images (e.g., Date Print over Photo)  Trim/Crop Capabilities  Early disconnect information tracking so that mobile handhelds can leave once the data transfer was complete  Preserving User Intent on a print (e.g., conserve photo paper) PrintBasic:2 requires Enhanced XHTML-Print support for documents  JPEG support for images

XHTML-Print Guideline A guideline document supplemental to the normative XHTML-Print specification and will be included as an annex to the PrintBasic:2 specification. The guideline consists of three sections : Interpretation Rules  Specifies how PrintBasic:2 printers should interpret expressions to achieve consistent output. Usage Rules  Specifies how content should be written by clients to achieve consistent output among PrintBasic:2 printers. Templates (Reference)  Example templates provided to highlight expected output. XHTML-Print/CSS Print Profile Application Print stream PrintBasic:2 Guideline(Informative) Print Basic:2

Proposed Schedule Working Committee FormedMarch 2004 Preliminary Design (Ver 0.8)September 3, 2004 Plugfest #1 PrintBasic:2Mid-November 2004 Plugfest #2 PrintBasic:2Early-December 2004 Design Complete (Ver 0.9) – No major issues, minor editorial changes only December 2004 Technical Committee Approval (10 days)/ Start 45 Day Review December 2004 45-day review complete (IPR Review) End of January 2005 SC approval of specs (Ver 1.0)January 2005

Call to Action UPnP Printing is simple and valued by your customers. The Imaging Committee encourages Consumer Electronics device (Control Points) vendors to enable UPnP printing. Printer Vendors should support UPnP PrintBasic:2 providing ubiquitous photo printing.
