2 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Centre for International Students & Study Abroad (CISSA): -Provides advising and support to international students coming to the UofC and -Promotes international experiences to Canadian students, both abroad and on campus.

4 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Intenational Students University of Calgary has: -Fall 2007,1945 international students registered, -From ~100 countries -Approx: 37% are undergrad (degree), 9% Exchange (UG), and 54% are Graduate, Post Degree or Open Studies -18% of Residence students are international and 55% in married housing..

7 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad International Students Scholarships (new for Fall 2007). -5 Entrance awards each year valued at $20,000/year for 4 years. -Athletics: 3 awards a year valued at $10,000/year for 4 years. -Entrance awards: 20 awards of $5000 each. -Continuing student awards of $5000..

9 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Study Programs To accomplish this we have a centalized office to administer Study Abroad and have expanded our grants programs program to students to over $300,000 in 2007/08. In November 2006 President Weingarten made an announcement that by 2010, the UofC would like to have 30% of our graduating class with study abroad experience. www.ucalgary.ca/aboutwww.ucalgary.ca/about He also announced that we would have 1000 students go abroad in 2007.

12 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Exchanges Spend a summer, a semester or a year at one of over 75 universities in 30 countries and transfer credit to your U of C degree. 13 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Program Costs: Exchange students can expect to spend ~ $7,000-$9,000 per semester (includes tuition, books, accommodation, food, travel and personal spending) The cost varies depending on the destination, the exchange rate, each students’ personal spending habits, etc. Can I Afford to go Abroad?

14 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Many Exchange Partner Universities offer a selection of courses or entire programs in English: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Turkey the Netherlands, Mexico, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and many more! What about Language? *Most Exchanges in Germany, France & Latin America have language requirements

17 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Program Costs: Group Study Programs range in price from $2100 - $10,000 depending on the length of the program, amount of travel involved, etc. Can I Afford to go Abroad?

18 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Most courses offered through the Group Study Programs are taught in English. What about Language? Some programs focus on intensive language learning.

19 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad If the U of C doesn’t have a program where a student wants to go, they can make their own arrangements. Pay tuition & fees at host institution, NOT at U of C CISSA Resource Library Online resources (CISSA website, www.studyabroad.com, etc.) Setting up your own program:

20 Centre for International Students & Study Abroad Financial Support: Eligible students are still able to collect Student Loans and scholarships at the U of C International Studentships offer $400-$2000 travel grants to assist students going abroad. Other Scholarships are available through U of C departments, outside organizations, etc. Can I Afford to go Abroad?

Session times: –Tuesdays @ 2 –Wednesdays @ noon –Thursdays @ noon Sessions cover what programs are available, application processes, deadlines, and requirements, etc.
