1 EFFECTIVE BUSINESS LETTER Per 3, 5: 10/16/14 Per 2, 4, 6: 10/17/14

2 SWBAT :  Write effective business letters with attention to audience, purpose, and format.  Analyze/score the strengths and weaknesses of a sample letter according to our CAHSEE Writing Rubric and what we know about effective business letters.  Use technology to reflect on your understanding of the lesson. IWBAT: GOAL/OBJECTIVES:

3 WHAT IS A BUSINESS LETTER? A business letter is written in formal language. The letter is written for official correspondence between two organizations and customers, clients, etc. Purposes : applying for a scholarship, writing a letter of recommendation, applying for a job, proposing an idea to a boss or principle ???

4 HOW TO WRITE EFFECTIVE LETTER:  WHO: Analyze your reader and set the proper tone.  WHY/WHAT: Have a Clear Sense of Purpose  HOW: Draft, revise and edit your letter multiple times

7 DETAILS TO BE WRITEN Body of the Letter Introductory Paragraph Discussion Paragraph Concluding Paragraph (2 Spaces below salutation and 2 spaces below each paragraph) Complimentary Close and Signed Name Place a comma after the complimentary close and put your signature above your printed name.

15 Imagine you are a college counselor at a high school. Write a 4 paragraph letter of recommendation to a college admissions board describing why a student at your high school would be a perfect addition to their university. BUSINESS LETTER PROMPT:

17  Spend 5-7 minutes brainstorming ideas of the details you can include in your letter to address the topic of your letter. PRE-WRITE:

19  You are now ready to write the introductory paragraph of your business letter. In addition, make sure to include the proper heading information (writer’s address, recipient address). WRITE:

20  Using the CAHSEE Scoring Rubric and information about effective business letter writing, you will peer edit/provide feedback to your partner’s letter. Make sure to make necessary changes and provide useful feedback.  You will then score the start of their letter on the 4-point scale of the writing rubric and explain why you gave them that score. PEER EDIT/FEEDBACK:
