Types of Membranes, Muscular Tissue, & Nervous Tissue Section 5.4-5.6

 Thin, sheet-like structures composed of epithelium and underlying connective tissue covering body surfaces and lining body cavities  Major Types of Membranes  Serous  Mucous  Cutaneous

 Lines body cavities that lack openings to the outside  Cover internal organs  Simple squamous epithelial cells and a thin layer of loose connective tissue  Secrete watery serous fluid

 Lines cavities and tubes that open to the outside of the body  Including the oral and nasal cavities & digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems  Some cells secrete mucus

 The skin  Many layers of epithelial cells to provide a barrier

 Elongated cells that can contract by shortening  Moves body parts  3 types of muscle tissue:  Skeletal  Smooth  Cardiac

 Found in the muscles that attach to bones  Called voluntary muscle tissue  Long, threadlike cells that have striations  Many nuclei in 1 cell  Stimulated to contract by nerve signals

 No striations  Shorter, spindle shaped with a single, central nucleus  Makes up hollow internal organs (stomach, intestine, uterus, bladder, blood vessels)  Involuntary muscles

 Only found in the heart  Involuntary muscle  Striated branched cells joined end to end to form an intricate network  Single nucleus in each cell

 Found in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves  Made up of neurons (nerve cells) that transmit impulses to communicate with other tissues in the body  Also made up of neuroglial cells that support neurons by binding to them and supplying them with nutrients
