(Otherwise known as Object Pronouns or D.O.Ps and I.O.s) Los Complementos Directos, Indirectos y Reflexivos

An Overview In this presentation we are going to review the following: The different types of object pronouns. Where to place them in a sentence. What to do if there is more than one. Your mission… and you must accept it, is to learn this as quickly as possible. Are you ready?

You remember these, don’t you? nos Nosotros nos bañamos todos los días. se Él se enoja. se El estudiante se aburre.

Do these ring a bell? lo ¿Ves el perro? Sí, lo veo. la ¿Quién comió la pizza? Yo la comí. teme ¿Quién te llamó? María me llamó.

LOS LOS (them, you all) LAS LAS (them, you all) LO LO (him, it,you) LA LA (her, it, you) OS OS (you all) TE TE (you) NOS NOS (us) ME ME (me) These are used when the object which receives the action is not the same as the subject, in other words, the person “doing” it, is not “getting” it.

And let’s not forget… me Mi novio me dio flores. le Yo le pregunto a la profesora. nos La profesora nos lee un libro. My boyfriend gave ME flowers ( to me.)

(to/for them Les Les to/for you all) (to/for him Le Le to/for her to/or you) Os Os (to/for you all) Te Te (to/for you) Nos Nos (to/for us) Me Me (to/for me) Indirect object pronouns receive the action of the subject indirectly. You can usually add “to” or “for” to the sentence to determine if it’s really an indirect in disguise.

Let’s go back a minute… So, is it direct or indirect? Well, let’s see. Take a guess and see if you are right. me Mi novio me dio flores. nos La profesora nos lee un libro. My boyfriend gave me flowers. My boyfriend gave flowers TO me. It’s an indirect! The teacher read us a book. The teacher read a book TO us. Another sneaky indirect!

So what’s next? Oh yeah, So, where do you put them anyway?

Rule 1: Whatever you do with object pronouns, they must all stay together. To be continued… Se me Se me olvidó te lo Yo te lo he dicho varias veces. nos Él nos está leyendo. Rule 2: You can always put them in front of the verb group but you can never put them between verb groups.

Rule 3: If there is an infinitive or a progressive in the sentence, you can attach them to the end of the infinitive. (but remember to attach all or none.) selas Yo iba a cocinárselas. telos Él está comprándotelos melos dámelos me los No me los dés Rule 4: You must attach to affirmative command. You cannot attach to negatives. Rule 5: If you attach, you need to watch out for accents!

All together now! Now I know that you have all asked at one time or another, What do you do if there is more than one in a sentence? First, you have to remember to keep them together…

And a couple of other things… Second, you need to remember which come first. It goes like this: ReflexivesIndirectsDirects MeNosMeNosMeNos TeOsTeOsTeOs SeSeLeLesLo/LaLos/Las

Third, and here’s the tricky part… Spanish doesn’t like putting two pronouns which both begin with “”L” together. So, when you have sentences like: We are reading it to him LoLe Step 2: change the indirect, “le” to “se”. Step 1: replace the pronouns and put them in the right order, indirect first.

Shall we do that again? The girl drew it for him. (it= un dibujo) Step 1- decide on the pronouns and their order. lole Step 2- if both begin with “l” change the indirect to “se”. selo La chica se lo dibujó.

One more time before we say Adiós We are making them for you. (present progressive) (them= hamburgers) Put them on! (Ud. command, reflexive verb) (them=shoes) I am going to buy it for her. (it= the dress.) telasEstamos haciendo Estamos haciéndotelas/ Te las estamos haciendo lossePonga ¡Póngaselos! Voy a comprarlole Voy a comprárselo Se lo voy a comprar se With 2 “l” pronouns…the IOP becomes “se”

Y ahora, puedes tratar Y ahora, puedes tratar… write on your own paper. My sister bought them for me. (them= ) I want to try them on. (to try on is reflexive.) I’m wearing them today, she can wear them tomorrow. (to wear is also reflexive.)

Can there be anymore? Can there be anymore? Perhaps, but certainly not for now.
