4 ECOMM 2007Date 11/05/2007 Facts and Figures The British Chamber of Commerce transport survey, 2004, found that: 84% of firms identify roads as essential to their business operations. The cost incurred as a result of problems with the UK’s transport is on average of £27,000 per year. Applied across the entire UK economy this equates to an annual cost of £15 billion. 55% of business believes road capacity needs to be urgently increased. Loss of man-hours was reported as the most commonly experienced problem. 84% of businesses experience loss of man-hours as a result of the UK’s transport infrastructure, with 37% citing it as having a significant impact on this area of their business. Increased operating costs are the second most experienced problem by 76% of businesses, one third (32%) stated that it had a significant impact on their business.

10 ECOMM 2007Date 11/05/2007 The Glades Shopping Centre An average of 360,000 shoppers visit the Glades each week 150 businesses – 3000 staff 19 million people per year Funding - ASTUTE and TfL Approximately half of Glades visitors arrive by car (and 45% of these park in The Glades) There is a very good public transport system – bus and train and two railway stations Travel Plan almost complete Next stage – 2 launch events (Staff and Public) Measures: (Awareness raising – existing facilities/marketing) -Challenge covered by media -PT info -Pilot car share scheme/ shift pattern study -Expand on existing freight consolidation study

12 ECOMM 2007Date 11/05/2007 London Borough of Bromley Final Staff Travel Plan just completed – to go through committee next month Drivers – reduction of peak time congestion, land-use and lack of car parking space affecting the Town Centre 61.5% of respondents travel alone by car Measures: -Steering group including departmental reps and CEOs -Studies -Training -Extra facilities -Marketing -Pool car/ alternative fuelled pool car

13 ECOMM 2007Date 11/05/2007 Unilever Manufacturer of leading brands in foods, home care and personal care The anticipated relocation of 650 employees in the UK Studio to central Guildford will only provide for 100 parking spaces onsite Committed to CSR policy This creates a very physical problem for day 1 of relocation Early feedback suggests this may create anxiety and a distraction for employees with resulting dangers of disruption or staff turnover if transport costs or inconvenience are perceived as too high Successful Relocation needs : -Managed alternative parking arrangements in Guildford -Positively accepted compensation model at reasonable cost -Measured modal shift from single occupancy car -High awareness of the alternative travel options to get to Guildford site
