What is training and development? Refers to a planned effort by an organization to facilitate the learning of job-related behavior on the part of its employees. Involves knowledge and skill acquisition. What are some goals of training and development? Improving self-awareness Increase skill in one or more areas Increase motivation Why do we need training? A triggering event

Concepts and meanings Learning – a relatively permanent change in behavior that occurs from practice. Behavior – includes the knowledge and skills acquired by people. Knowledge – the organized body of facts, principles, procedures, and information acquired over time. Declarative Knowledge – memory Procedural Knowledge – organization Strategic Knowledge – planning

Concepts and meanings Skills – capacities needed to perform a set of tasks. Compilation – lower level – newly acquired Automaticity – higher level – performance without thinking. Attitudes – beliefs or opinions that support or inhibit behavior. Affects behavior. Competencies – a set up KSA’s that enable a person to be successful at a number of similar tasks.
