6 OVERVIEW The documentary follows a systematic glance to the transforming physical spaces and urban outlook of Karachi. It also creates an understanding about the responses of the people in addressing the dangerous law and order situation of the city and the impacts of those responses. This research informs about the reasons and situations that have influenced and caused the uproar of violence, crime and illegal activities in the city. It analyzes the diverse types of urban conflicts, their potential causes and impacts on urban spaces. As a result of this research, the potential areas of concern are highlighted, and deduced by the analysis of available and relevant statistics, interviews with concerned professionals, social workers and politicians.

7 LESSON LEARNT Barriers are an irreversible reality A new typology of spaces has evolved comprising of active carriage ways but passive and non-accessible footpaths. People divided as beneficiaries and affectees of barriers New institutional arrangements are needed Invisible peri-urban localities need attention and reforms

8 QUESTIONS If not barricading, then what other alternatives can protect the high security risk areas? If barriers are an irreversible reality, then in what other ways can their design be explored? Example translucent barriers etc. If fighting the insurgents is the long term fix then what other short/long term solutions can be proposed apart from barricading?
