3 Hammurabi’s Code First official set of laws was founded by king Hammurabi. –People believed he was called on by god. Nearly 4,000 years old (3,785 to be exact) –The Code consists of 282 laws, with scaled punishments, adjusting "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth“.

4 LAWS If a man destroyed the eye of a free man, his own eye should be destroyed.

5 MORE LAWS If a doctor operates on a man for a severe wound or a tumor and causes the man to die, his hands shall be cut off.

6 EVEN MORE LAWS If a man takes a woman to wife, but has no intercourse with her, this woman is no wife to him.

7 LAST LAW If a man is married and his wife becomes ill, he may marry a second wife. However, he may not divorce his first wife, who should live in his home and be supported by him until she dies.
