[EEF S05 MINI] - Kiss-EmbeddedSystemsPCBs1 Spring 2005 EEF Mini-Proposal Project: Embedded Systems PCBs DESIGN 1: 8051 Development Board PCB DESIGN 2: Signal Integrity Analysis PCB DESIGN 3: USB Development Board PCB February 16, 2005 Lawrence Kiss Master’s Candidate Department of Electrical Engineering Lawrence.Kiss@colorado.edu Kunal Shenoy Master’s Candidate Department of Electrical Engineering Kunal.Shenoy@colorado.edu

[EEF S05 MINI] - Kiss-EmbeddedSystemsPCBs2 DESIGN 1: 8051 Development Board PCB Existing perf board used by students can easily break. Board requires lots of drilling which is time consuming and prone to error. PCB will have all holes already drilled and will be much stronger. Existing perf board requires extensive wire wrapping, which is time consuming. PCB will have traces already routed for many signals, saving time. Example of student board at end of semester after all components have been added. PCB will have similar appearance.

[EEF S05 MINI] - Kiss-EmbeddedSystemsPCBs3 DESIGN 2: Signal Integrity Analysis PCB Signal integrity, or the quality of electrical signals as they propagate between circuit components, is an extremely important issue facing all high speed designs today. Our PCB will allow students to investigate signal integrity issues, including: crosstalk, clock skew, conductor termination, ground plane effects, ringing, decoupling, and metastability The design of the traces on this PCB is as important as the components that will be loaded into the board. This board is expected to be slightly larger and more expensive than the 8051 and USB PCBs. An earlier prototype was constructed by a former student, but the design was flawed and didn’t show the signal integrity issues it should have. We’re learning from these flaws so that our PCB will work correctly.

[EEF S05 MINI] - Kiss-EmbeddedSystemsPCBs4 DESIGN 3: USB Development Board PCB Existing Cypress USB development board costs $500 each. This limits the number of boards that can be purchased to support student learning. There is also no budget for repair or replacement of these expensive boards. Our proposed development board will be similar to this picture, and will be affordable for students – no more than $60, and closer to $30-$40 in quantity. Cypress has donated the chips for these boards.

[EEF S05 MINI] - Kiss-EmbeddedSystemsPCBs5 Item Unit Price Quantity Total Cost DESIGN 1 (8051 Development Board PCB): Prototype PCB manufactured(Rev. 1) $40.00 2$ 80.00 Prototype PCB manufactured(Rev. 2) $40.00 2$ 80.00 Parts for prototype boards (sockets, ICs) $25.00 4$100.00 DESIGN 2 (Signal Integrity Analysis PCB): Prototype PCB manufactured(Rev. 1) $50.00 2$100.00 Prototype PCB manufactured(Rev. 2) $50.00 2$100.00 Parts for prototype boards (sockets, ICs) $25.00 4$100.00 DESIGN 3 (USB Development Board PCB): Prototype PCB manufactured(Rev. 1) $40.00 2$ 80.00 Prototype PCB manufactured(Rev. 2) $40.00 2$ 80.00 Parts for prototype boards (sockets, ICs) $20.00 4$ 80.00 Total $800.00 Revision 1 of each design will be completed and tested during the Spring 2005 semester. Many hours of work have already been invested in these designs. Revision 2 of each design will be completed and tested by the end of Summer 2005. Rev. 2 will improve upon the first revision and fix any issues uncovered during testing. Budget & Schedule

[EEF S05 MINI] - Kiss-EmbeddedSystemsPCBs6 Why EEF Should Fund This Proposal Project benefits many students, has a lasting impact. Project has a high probability of success – much work has already been done. PCBs will be ready for use by other students by Fall 2005. PCBs will improve the learning experience for embedded systems students. Using PCBs instead of perf board in lab will save students significant development time. Project has other guaranteed support from Cypress and Professor McClure. PCB development work will be supervised in an independent study. Project has an excellent return for the investment – a great value for the EEF. Thank you!
