2 Mission Overview What: To send bacteria to near space and analyze the effects to which the growth rate is affected by the atmospheric conditions Why: To discover how and why the bacteria react as they do, and to what extent they are able to recover from the change in climate How: Bacteria will be sent into near space with a Geiger counter and will be compared to a control group kept on the ground

3 Design Parts: Geiger Counter Two petri dishes with bacteria Two temperature sensors AVR Microcontroller board and batteries Parts: Geiger Counter Two petri dishes with bacteria Two temperature sensors AVR Microcontroller board and batteries

4 Experimental Procedure Will cultivate three plates of bacteria: 1) will be a control 2) will be exposed to radiation of upper atmosphere 3) the last will be exposed to radiation and atmospheric temperature Will test the amount of viable bacteria present before and after launch, compare quantitatively to control plate of bacteria

6 Management Kirstyn Johnson Project Lead Ryder Whitmire Systems Lead David Borncamp Structural Lead Leonard Komow Programming Lead Lauren Persons Electrical Lead Jonathan Pfohl Scientific Lead Kirstyn Johnson: Will manage the overall progress of the mission, delegate responsibilities, and enforce schedule deadlines. Ryder Whitmire: Will oversee the integration of individual systems into the finished satellite and the testing of the systems. Leonard Komow: Will oversee the programming of the AVR microcontroller, camera, and if necessary Geiger counter. Also in charge of drawing up the mission schedule and all schedule revisions. Lauren Persons: Will be in charge of any electrical construction and/or repairs throughout the build. Minor experience in SolidWorks and C++. David Borncamp: Will create the computer design and machine the physical satellite. Has experience in machining parts, designing in SolidWorks, and circuits. Jonathan Pfohl: Will manage the design and construction of the scientific mission, the collection and analysis of data, and will also manage the budget, including procurement of necessary supplies.
