Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Non-Linear PowerPoint: A Professional Development Workshop iMet 7, Group 5 Ben Anderson, Diana Ganju, Dave Margolis, Sue Womack

Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Our group was intrigued from the start by Ben’s idea of developing an on-line supported Professional Development module. The strategies and the tools were chosen AND evolved in a symbiotic way. http://www.edmedia.net/courses/281/intro.html

Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Strategies Our research indicated that adult learners retain more content when advance organizers are used. advance organizers Sequencing Instruction Sequencing Instruction for optimal learning is critical for all learners, especially on complex content. Throughout our tutorials modeling was used to strengthen the understanding of non-linear PowerPoint.modeling

Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Tools We have used Dreamweaver and Breeze as the interfaces to teach non-linear PowerPoint.

Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Project http://imet.csus.edu/imet7/margo lis/281/project/ We wanted a project that would reflect our interest in Professional Development. We created a 4 hour professional development workshop with on-line support to teach branching and linking PowerPoint. Our project is best explained by viewing the site.

Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Advance Organizer Principles: 1. The most general ideas of a subject should be presented first and then progressively differentiated in terms of detail and specificity. 2. Instructional materials should attempt to integrate new material with previously presented information through comparisons and cross-referencing of new and old ideas. Kearsley, Greg. Subsumption Theory. (TIP) database. Retrieved Oct. 2004 from http://tip.psychology.org/ausubel.htmlhttp://tip.psychology.org/ausubel.html Advance Organizer, continued

Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Advance Organizer We present 2 types of advance organizers: 1.A graphic comparing & contrasting traditional PowerPoint with Non- linear;graphic 2. An overview presentation, chunking and pre-organizing the new material.

Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Sequencing Instruction Gagne(1985) Suggests the following sequence as being optimal for learning: (1) gaining attention (reception) (2) informing learners of the objective (expectancy) (3) stimulating recall of prior learning (retrieval) (4) presenting the stimulus (selective perception) (5) providing learning guidance (semantic encoding) (6) eliciting performance (responding) (7) providing feedback (reinforcement) (8) assessing performance (retrieval) (9) enhancing retention and transfer (generalization ). Our workshop follows this sequence as evidenced by the workshop agenda.workshop agenda

Strategies Tools Project Bibliography Introduction Modeling As we learned in Social Learning Theory, modeling is another important way people learn. Our project models the skills we are teaching implicitly and explicitly. The interface itself is an example of non-linear PowerPoint. As the students work through the tutorials in the workshop, they have constantly before them the model of what they are learning. Within tutorials, every step is modeled so students can follow along in another window. tutorials
