4 1.Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists Objective Research grants provide young foreign academics and scientists with an opportunity to carry out a research project at a German higher education institution or non-university research institute.

5 1.Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists Research grants can be used to carry out: I.Research projects at a German higher education institution for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in the home country

6 Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists Research grants can be used to carry out: II.Research projects at a German university for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in Germany III. Research projects, but without aiming for a formal degree/qualification

7 Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists Duration  Depending on the project in question and on the applicant's work schedule, grants can be paid generally for between one and ten months

8 Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists  in the case of full doctoral programmes in Germany for up to three years, and in exceptions for up to a maximum of four years.  Support can only be provided for the completion of a full doctoral programme in Germany when special support policy reasons exist

9 Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists Requirements  DAAD research grants are open to: - excellently-qualified university graduates who hold a Master's degree at the time they commence the grant-supported research or - already holding a doctorate/PhD (post-docs).

10 Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists The application papers must:  generally include written confirmation of academic supervision by a professor in Germany  expressly refer to the applicant's project  thereby confirming that the host institute will provide a workplace

11 Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists The most important selection criterion is:  a convincing and well-planned research project to be completed during the stay in Germany and which has been coordinated and agreed with an academic supervisor at the chosen German host institute.

12 Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists Further Requirements:  German language skills are generally required, although the required level also depends on the applicant's project and topic  Age limit: 32 at the start of the award for grants scheduled to run for 7 months or more.  Age limit: 36 at the start of the award for grants scheduled to run for up to 6 months.

14 The Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest research organisation with an annual budget of around 2.2 billion euros and 24,000 staff concentrated in 15 research centres 2. Helmholtz-DAAD-Fellowships

15 - Helmholtz-DAAD Fellowships offer excellent young scientists and researchers the opportunity to do research at a Helmholtz Centre in Germany. - The special programme jointly run by the Helmholtz Association and the DAAD is intended for highly-qualified foreign doctoral and postdoctoral students.

18 Requirements Applicants for a Helmholtz-DAAD- Fellowship must: 1.be able to prove their excellent study or research achievements, 2.have completed their studies or research with a university degree for Type A or with a doctorate for Type B,

19 3. have an excellent knowledge of English, proven through submission of appropriate language certificates (e.g. TOEFL: 550/217); knowledge of German is welcome 4. in general be not older than 32 years (Type A) or have completed their doctorate in the last two years (Type B). 22 The Leibniz Association is a scientific organisation comprised of 84 non-university research institutes. Leibniz Association cooperates with industry, public administration and universities. 3. Leibniz-DAAD-Scholarships for Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs

23 3. Leibniz-DAAD-Scholarships for Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs Leibniz Institutes are grouped into five sections: Humanities and education Economic and social sciences Life sciences Physical sciences Environmental research

24 The Leibniz-DAAD-Scholarship is open to:  Highly motivated and qualified graduates, Ph.D. students and Postdocs aiming to carry out research at one of the participating Leibniz Institutes.  Candidates should be aware of the research profile of possible host institutes.  It is expected that the candidates rank among the top performers of their corresponding peer group.

25 Objective  The “Leibniz DAAD - Scholarships” provide young foreign academics and scientists with an opportunity to complete a research project at a Leibniz Institute.  The scholarships are financed by the partici-pating Leibniz Institutes and awarded according to the regular DAAD-scholarship conditions. 3. 27 Requirements  Applications for a “Leibniz – DAAD – Scholarship” are open to excellently- qualified university graduates who hold a Master’s degree at the time they commence the supported research (Type A or B) or  who have already gained their doctorate / PhD (Type C). 28  The most important selection criteria are the previous study and research achievements in one of the research fields of the participating Leibniz Institutes. Leibniz-DAAD-Scholarships for Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs

29  English language skills (TOEFL: 550 / 217) are generally required and to be proved; the host Leibniz Institute is responsible for deciding on whether or not to fund a two- months German language course. Leibniz-DAAD-Scholarships for Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs

31 Leibniz-DAAD-Scholarships for Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs  Applicants for a Type A scholarship are subject to an age limit of 32.  Applicants for a Type B scholarship should not be older than 36 years at the time of application.  Applicants for a Type C scholarship should not have exceeded the age of 42 years.
