3 Part One Discuss the following pictures: - Where do you think the photos were taken? - Why do people buy things?

4 Banking on The Poor Briefly look over the list of words from the reading that follows: Poverty lift anonymous take the initiative Character fund worthlesspeer pressure Capacityplowsocial ills eradication Literacy Collateral Subsidiary Microlending microenterpreneurs

5 Getting Meaning from context Sometimes abbreviations (shortened forms of words) help us to understand a new word or phrase: e.g.= for example i.e.= that is = in other words This is a group of microentreprenuers—i.e. people who own and run their own small business. Who are microentrepreneurs?

6 Read the text entitled “Banking on the Poor” [Interactions 2, pp. 47-48] 3.1. Summarizing (p.49) Circle the number if the one main idea of the reading selection: 1. There seems to be o escape from poverty for many people. 2. Microlending is a system of banks and programs that are loaning money to people in borrowing groups. 3. It’s possible to break the “cycle of poverty” with planning, education, cooperation, and some money. 4. Good Faith and the Global Fund for Women give money to poor people.

7 3.2. Skimming (for main ideas) - As discussed in the previous chapter to find the main ideas you may skim the text quickly. - The focus is not in the details, but in the main idea (topic). A paragraph usually tells about one topic (subject). The topic is just a word or noun phrase---a few words. - Read the text again pp. 47-48 and find topic and topic sentence of each paragraph.

8 3.3. Discuss with your friend the following questions (p. 50) 1. In your country, do banks require collateral before they loan money to someone? What kind of things are used fro collateral? 2. In your country, do people sometimes join a cooperative group to borrow money? If so, what are these groups called? How do they work? 3. What are some social problems in your country? What are people doing to solve them?

10 PART THREE To break “the cycle of poverty”, people do not only need money, but they also need planning, cooperation, and education. Find at least two English articles which exposed the serious efforts of a local government or non government organizations to help the poor in Indonesia to be a microentrepreneur. The task will be submitted on the second meeting. (Week 4)
