2 NEXT CENTURY - SEA LEVEL MAY RISE: BY If/When the West Antarctic Ice Sheet melts – 19 feet If/When the Greenland ice sheet melts – 24 feet If/When the East Antarctic ice sheet melts – 170 feet Total 213 feet SCIAM – Feb 2008 64 metres “…predicting future sea level changes from the current climate models greatly underestimates the future contribution of the polar ice sheets to sea level rise” Robin E Bell, Columbia University, Vice chair, International Planning Group, For the International Polar Year. WHY BOTHER TO CUT EMISSIONS? WHY CHANGE THE TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE? James Hansen NASA Goddard 7 April 08 …we have grossly underestimated the problem.. If we follow business as usual, I can’t see how west Antarctica could survive a century.

3 FOODTUBES is a Stop-Global-Warming, Design, Development & Licensing initiative. The team includes experts from: Stoner Software, ADVANTICA (British Gas) PIAP – Industrial Research Institute for Automation & Measurement FUE - Fundacion Universidad-Empresa de Madrid Clarendon Laboratories, Oxford Imperial College London; Warsaw University of Technology The Freight Pipeline Company, USA Pneutrans Systems Limited, Canada Force Engineering Limited, UK SW2000 Intelligent Transport (Noel HODSON – Coordinator) Swift Software - UK & Canada Collier Campbell – London. DESIGNS to be REGISTERED BY IPR Lawyers, Pitmans. Licensed by FGOSA – Foodtubes Global Standards Agency (NPO). 5 BASIC LOGIC FOR FUEL SAVING. HGV – weighs up to 30,000 kg. (unladen). 40 capsules weigh up to 680 kg. (unladen). 40 times less weight. “Smart” & shorter routing underground. NB - Heat loss, Friction, Traffic Jams, and also Road/Pipeline wear and tear.

6 Replace a 44 tonne, 40 metre trucks with 20 – 30 ultra-light, carbon fibre cargo- capsules & propel them through pipelines with Linear Induction Motors. WILL THEY CHANGE? The traditional freight industry is deeply entrenched at every level of government and commerce. In 1969 in the USA, the truck lobby stopped 10 inch pneumatic capsule-pipeline transport of mail. WHAT DOES IT COST? - Jan 2008 – M25 new lanes - $28 M /km. HGV’s do 80% of the damage to roads. FOODTUBES will cost $5 M /km – and last 50 years. Interlinked 150 km sections will be built, connecting farms, manufacturers and retailers – Public Terminals for small business use. Terminals at school & university campuses, office blocks and military camps. A 1.57 Cubic Metres cargo-capsule journey – will be charged at about $10. IN THE FUTURE - IF FOODTUBES SPAN THE GLOBE. 3 rd world farmers and starving communities will benefit. A Farm-to-markets, FOODTUBES proposal has been outlined to help Argentine farmers.

12 Finally… Even the best carbon saving transport ideas will not get off the ground – or, in this case, under-the-ground – …if they cost the Earth and make a loss. The initial calculations are very encouraging. A complete system for the UK will earn annual revenues of $20 billion dollars and a surplus of $15 billion dollars. So …FOODTUBES saves the Earth and makes a profit. Thank you for your attention. 13 Burying polyethylene pipes locks up carbon – tarmac & tyres create a toxic and continual carbon dust (road surface wear & tear). Volume for 23M households is approx 1.5Million cubic metres per day – weight is about 88,386 tonnes. Most food is transported several times in the processes from farm to home. UK – 697,880 HGVs and Vans transport food (MoT) – many times the tonnage and volume capacity compared to the goods. These vehicles burn about 5B litres a year. All UK road freight burns 16.9B litres per year. All traffic burns 64B+ litres p.a. V. conservative in our financial calcs. - ALL UK ENERGY equivalent to 188B litres p.a. thus UK is 9% saved not 23% (global average – is less in dense, developed OECD countries). NB – Remember that traffic decongestion effect is the largest saving – 3 times larger. Shopping per person – food, drinks & supermarket goods – 10 kilos per week – 0.17 cu metres per week UK – 23M households - 17,216 km of pipes – 3.47 million capsules Empty/parked capsules 35% 188 capsules per km – 188 X (2 + 2 (min gap) ) = 752 metres = 72% of length. Available gap 3.3 metres Average Cargo 20 kilo per capsule journey (44lbs) (its those pesky Cornflakes again) Average capsule – weighs 15 kilos (NB LIM Reactor plate) Average journey is not relevant – it is the total load in the system that counts – but probably 50-100klms in the UK Minimum (food suppliers and shops only) 31,000 terminals Fuel Saved – UK Direct replacement of vehicles by capsules – 4.3B litres WORLD 476B litres UK traffic decongestion effect -13.0Blitres WORLD 1,437B litres CO 2 Saved UK (for CARBON – divide CO2 by 3.67) 0.05B tonnes WORLD 5.13B tonnes CO2 =23.17% average of annual increment. ( it’s a greater % in less developed regions.) HEAVILY INVESTED IN ROAD & RAIL LOGISTICS: Largest UK Super-market – TESCO – have own lorry fleet and transport business. About 30% of UK food. Largest World is WALMART (USA) - 2 nd Largest is Carrefour (Europe). CO2 is 0.03% of the atmosphere. REGARDLESS OF GLOBAL WARMING, FOODTUBES WILL CLEAR THE STREETS AND CUT POLLUTION.
