I slipped nearly when I got to the optical section and said to the assistant, "I'm here for the ice-cream." "Ice-cream?" she replied. "Sorry. What we have i is a free eye screening".

As a matter of fact he had fallen so soundly asleep that the maid had been able to wake him up only with great difficulty. We decided that we would meet half an hour later in my office. When I left the office, after talking to / with him, it was half past eight. I took a taxi but the streets were so bad because of the snow that it took me more than an hour to get to the station. Had I arrived / If I had arrived only five minutes earlier I could have caught the 21.30 train. Instead I had to wait for the following one which leaves Milan at 10.25 p.m.
