Pictorial space Lavanya Sharan March 21st, 2011

Real world vs. 2-D depiction Real world (this is obviously a photographic substitute) Image sources: Picasaweb, fineartamerica.com, srquebectrip.blogspot.com Pictorial space (2-D photographs, videos, paintings, print & on-screen etc.)

Cues in pictorial space? Occlusion Shading Geometric perspective Aerial perspective Object motion (videos) Stereo Accomodation Motion parallax (head- movements) Field-of-view Active viewing Spatial & temporal resolution Pictorial information 3-D cues that are lost or reduced And yet, compelling sense of 3-D space in pictures.

Conflict between cues Depth to picture (3-D cues) Depth within picture (pictorial cues) Image source: Life magazine Inconsistency in the depth information inside and outside the picture doesn’t bother us too much.

Size does matter Image source: timtim.com For the same visual angle, a closer screen conveys a smaller size than one further away.

Magnification & minification Image source: Picasaweb Display FOV > Geometric FOV leads to magnification. Display FOV < Geometric FOV leads to minification. Display field of view Geometric field of view

Viewing distance matters Image source: VPfaCGP Fig 12.2

Field of view matters Image source: VPfaCGP Fig 12.3

Camera object distances matter Image source: VPfaCGP Fig 12.4

Slant is affected too. Image source: VPfaCGP Fig 12.5 In addition to size and distances, perceived slant changes with field of view.
