7 CASE STUDY Craft apprentice who completes his/ her craft apprenticeship with a National Certificate and NVQ level 3 He /she transfers to Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering Technology (Year 2) which includes the NVQ 4 and Foundation Degree, which is validated and accredited by the IMechE (The Institution of Mechanical Engineers) and the RAeS (The Royal Aeronautical Society). He /she progresses to 3rd year of a BEng Degree (Hons) again fully validated and accredited by IMechE and the RAeS. He / she will have already started the MPDS (IMechE CPD process) and will be eligible for “Incorporated Engineer” professional registration. Employer & Semta is currently developing an appropriate MSc for validation in January 2010. He / she will then be able to continue MPDS, and within two years will be a ”Chartered Engineer” having started on the craft apprenticeship programme 9 years earlier and if he /she came directly onto the Higher Apprenticeship 7 years earlier.
