Southern New Mexico & El Paso Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) Area Goal is to ensure a collaborative and strategic community planning process that supports community growth and that sustains current and future military missions. Brought the Region Closer Together Understanding of each others mission and needs Established an Enduring Forum for Collaboration Implementation Committee going strong – application for grant in process Understand and be Tolerant of Differences Zoning vs individual property rights – each County has a different perspective Three Commissioner vs Five Commissioner counties Rural Communities want to be heard – est. advisory board to elected county leaders Stay Committed – Ensure Staff are Supporting Effort Changes in staff/leadership due to retirement/elections require re-education, re-commitment Relationships are Important – Relationships take Time! Periodic Leadership briefs to County Commission and City Council mtgs, etc Communities should expect and demand participation from Installations 10
