1 Back to School Night Welcome to the 5 th Grade Presentation

6 Grading –Academic Grades are given in the form of letter grades: A, B, C, D, E –Special Subject grades will be given as an: O, S, N Learning Skills - Skills other than academic, such as task completion, participation, teamwork, and following directions and procedures will have separate marks which are as follows: I Independent L Limited Prompting FP Frequent Prompting R Rarely Completes work NI Not enough information

7 Homework –All homework assignments will provide practice on the standard being taught. –Students need to complete this work in order to become independent on these concepts. –Unless indicated in advance, homework will not be used as part of the academic grade, but will be included in the learning skill grades on the report card. (Spelling Homework will be graded)

9 The Key system in the fifth grade is designed to reward students for all the hard work they put in during the school year. The keys students earn are on display in the classroom throughout the year. Encourage your child to earn these keys! At the end of the year each student’s keys are tallied and they are presented with a gold key or a silver key during the last Blue and Gold Assembly

10 To receive a Gold Key a student needs 40 keys. To receive a Silver Key a student needs 25 keys Ways to earn a key: –Community Service –Patrols –SGA –Chorus/Instrumental Music concert attendance –Grades ‘A’ on a Math or Science Unit test and a 100% on Spelling/Vocab –School Clubs

11 Students can also work towards keys by collecting star punches. Every ‘A’ earned receives one star punch. Every 100% earned receives two star punches A student will earn a key once they receive 10 star punches

12 Our Academic Goals include: –Becoming an independent learner –Preparing for the secondary learning model which begins in Middle School

13 Students are expected to read 30 minutes each night. Please review and sign the THR (Take Home Reading Log) regularly Ways parents can be involved with their child’s reading –Parents can read to their children –Discuss what your child has read with them –Listen to your child read aloud

14 MCPS has a set a reading goal for each fifth grader to read 25 books for the school year.

15 The math curriculum is very rigorous. –It is important for students to keep up with homework and take good notes in class. –It is also important for students to ask questions when they don’t understand.

16 In Science the Fifth Grade will be focusing on four main units: –Force, Motion, and Energy –Electricity and Magnetism –Solar System –Cells and Heredity

17 In Social Studies the Fifth Grade will study: –Citizens in Action: The Colonies Revolt –Economics: Creating a New Nation –The Evolving Country: Geography

18 –Various long-term academic projects Biography Wax Museum (in school) PIEE Fair (in school) –Field Trips Strathmore Concert, 10/11 Philadelphia, 10/20 Rock and Roll Revival, 1/12? Westward Ho, 5/18 –End of the Year Activity

19 Family Life Units Health and HIV/AIDS education in the spring Notification will be sent home for parent meetings for these units in the second half of the year

20 Students will be given take home projects periodically which enrich and enhance the MCPS curriculum. While the projects require students to use all the skills they are learning in school, they focus on a specific subject and sometimes involve technology. Students will always be given a packet, explaining the project. The packet will also contain a detailed rubric indicating what the students will be graded on. Please take the time to review the rubric with your student before they turn in their project!

28 If you are interested in volunteering for any of these activities, please sign up on the sign up sheets in the back of the gym We would like to form committees for some of these activities so please plan on attending a volunteer meeting we have planned for TBA.
