4 Business Services Management
Business Centric View to Monitoring IT Resources Value : Prioritize Application Issues Know which Business Process is Affected Enterprises typically have a diverse set of Applications that they use to cater to business needs. CRM, HelpDesk, Finance and even lots of Home Grown ones are some of them. Any downtime in critical applications impact the enterprise by lost revenues. However with reduced IT spending, the need to do more with the same number of staff has become even more important. To realize this, enterprises must ensure their IT Team makes best use of their time. They should ensure IT Operations prioritizes Operations Issues and cater to the most critical business service quickly and hence reduce impact of downtime. A Business Centric Monitoring Tools helps you achieve that by helping the Operator know which Business Process is affected. 4 4

5 Business Centric View (contd..)‏
First lets look more deep in to Business Services Management and its benefits: Lets take an example of a Loan Processing Application of an Enterprise, lets call GoFinance. To run this business process, GoFinance uses 10 App. Servers, 4 Oracle Databases, 2 Dedicated File Servers and some network devices. With ManageEngine Applications Manager, GoFinance can monitor the availability and performance of this business process along with its individual technology components. GoFinance also gains high level visibility of what business process needs immediate attention as alerts tell which business service is affected and hence helps the Operations team to prioritize and react. The grouping and dependency mapping capability also helps understand what network or application components affect the business process the most and take corrective action. Here, the availability matrix for a 3 month period is shown and you could identify that the Database Server needs more attention etc. With this, at the time of an audit, GoFinance can understand whether the bottleneck last month was the Application, Server or network. 5 5

7 Monitor a Heterogeneous IT Environment
Single Console for App Servers, Databases, Servers, Web Services & Web Transactions Value : Lesser Point Tools to Manage Troubleshoot Performance Issues faster and Effectively Server Management is Not Enough. You Need to Monitor All Tiers of Your Application for Effective Troubleshooting Traditional Network or Server Monitoring Tools cover only one technology silo. You need to monitor all tiers of your business application to speed up troubleshooting and resolving production issues quickly. ManageEngine Applications Manager gives you the visibility to identify the root cause of problems in multiple tiers of your Business Application. This helps troubleshoot application problems quickly. ManageEngine Applications Manager gives you the visibility to identify the root cause of problems in multiple tiers of your Business Application. 9 Performance Management (contd.)‏
The Web Transaction Monitoring helps ensure your web applications perform as expected in production. You can also track the response time of your web application using this capability. The J2EE Web Transactions Capability helps you troubleshoot poor response times issues for a J2EE App Server from a URL to the SQL Query. Applications Manager also have deep support for SOA : Web Services : Most Enterprises have complex Business Processes locked up in legacy systems. Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) help unlock them and build even more powerful processes. However, with SOA comes new challenges. ManageEngine Applications Manager, can help manage these mission critical Web Services and help ensure high uptime. Setting up the monitoring capability is easy. By specifying the WSDL (WebService Definition Language) as input, you can easily monitor all important SOAP Operations. Once setup you can rely on Applications Manager to track the availability and response times. Now with powerful reports and ability to set SLAs, your investments in these legacy systems can be safeguarded. Custom Applications: The custom Application monitoring capability is very powerful. It provides an easy mechanism to monitor metrics exposed by non supported applications. More in a later slide. 9 9

10 How Applications Manager Works ?
10 Monitoring Starts 10

11 Agentless Monitoring of a Heterogeneous Infrastructure
The above picture summarizes the capability of Applications Manager. Applications Manager is an agentless monitoring solution. In a very competitive environment, ManageEngine Applications Manager stands out for its in-depth performance monitoring using an agentless approach. An agentless approach to monitoring ensures that you do not need additional personnel to maintain “monitoring agents”, which beats the very purpose of investing in a performance management solution. Once setup, Applications Manager polls the various applications for performance metrics, and correlates them for intelligent alert escalation. It displays it in a Web Client in a graphical manner and allows users to configure thresholds and alerts so that any violations are easily notified via or SMS. Reports help identify impending problems and also help plan inventory. 11

12 Performance Metrics – Servers
CPU, Memory, Disk Process Monitoring Network Interface Stats Disk I/O Services on the Server AS400 server status, Number of jobs and Admin console Users will need to give server host, mode of monitoring, credentials and these metrics get collected without any further action from the users side. The configurations are done within the Applications Manager Web Client. 12 12

13 Performance Metrics – Application Servers
Sessions, Hits Per Second JVM Memory, Thread Pools Transaction Stats JMS, Queues Traffic Metrics Usage Patterns etc Users will need to give server host, port, credentials and these metrics get collected without any further action from the users side. The configurations are done within the Applications Manager Web Client. 13 13

14 Performance Metrics - Databases
Monitor Connection Times, Log Files, Monitor Tablespace, database size Buffer hit ratios Reads, Writes, I/O SQL Statistics, Locks etc Users will need to give server host, port, credentials and these metrics get collected without any further action from the users side. The configurations are done within the Applications Manager Web Client. 14 14

15 J2EE Web Transactions J2EE Web Transactions Monitor helps to better visualize J2EE Web Transactions end to end, with performance metrics of all components starting from URLs to SQL queries. With this feature, application teams can quickly identify the Performance metrics of WEB components, EJB, Java and SQL statements in production. They can view trace that will chart the sequence of the internal invocations (methods) of the URL 15 15

16 Monitor Custom Applications
Monitor custom applications that provides management information via JMX Monitor any SNMP enabled device Dashboards for Windows Performance Counters Trap Listener to listen to Alerts from SNMP Agents Write Custom Code in Java, .NET, Perl etc and Integrate Application Performance Metrics Custom Applications: The custom Application monitoring capability is very powerful. It provides an easy mechanism to monitor metrics exposed via SNMP, WMI, JMX by default. In addition to that users can also add custom monitoring capability by writing Java. .NET, Perl etc code and integrate the metrics in to Applications Manager. The benefit is users automatically get alerting, reporting, grouping behavior without any extra effort. 16 16

17 End User Experience Measurement
With support for simulating HTTP or HTTPS Web Transactions, ManageEngine Applications Manager can help you measure the End User Experience for your Web Applications. With powerful Record and playback GUI, setting up a Web Transaction Monitor is easy. This capability can help you visualize, how web pages respond for your end users. The Record and playback GUI is like an Internet Explorer Browser and users can do the recording or configuration via a simple tool, and update the same in to Applications Manager seemlessly. There is no need for any sort of scripting etc. Additionally the ability to define acceptable thresholds and SLAs for Page Response Times can ensure the needs of your end users are met. What time of the day your web application is slow or which day of the week is my Application the slowest are some of the important metrics that you can derive. Additionally with content checks and page change notifications, you can be alerted when problematic changes are done to your critical web pages. 17 17

18 SLA Management Define Service Level Objectives
Escalate SLA Violation via View SLA Metrics With SLA Management the user can track and identify if service is being delivered as promised. Administrators can also associate SLAs for individual Business Applications Present in Applications Manager. A special login for Managers is present. The “Manager” Role allows a manager to view SLA Metrics and be informed of issues in production at a high level. He can define SLOs for Availability and other metrics and keep tabs on overall application performance. SLA Violations can also be escalated via . 18 18

19 Applications Manager Enterprise Edition
Scalable Monitoring Architecture ManageEngine® Applications Manager Enterprise Edition is a scalable solution. It supports a distributed architecture and hence helps to monitor thousands of servers and applications. The Enterprise Edition comprises of a distributed data collector (Managed Servers) setup. It also provides a Single Console (Admin Server) for consolidated reports and monitoring of alerts. The Admin Server facilitates a single view to all data and reports from the various distributed data collectors (Managed Servers). Additionally, the Enterprise Edition uses HTTPS as the mode of communication between the Admin Server and the Managed Server. This has an added advantage for users with a very secure environment where only HTTPS is allowed across different networks. This architecture hence helps them over come any restrictions on their monitoring capability. 19 19

20 Fault Management Alert View Root Cause Analysis
When an error is detected, it can be notified immediately by configuring an action. There are many ways by which alert Notifications are done. Applications manager supports the following actions: Send , SMS, Execute custom scripts, sending SNMP Traps to third-party consoles, Logging a ticket in ManageEngine ServiceDeskPlus which is a Help Desk and Asset Management software. The Root Cause Analysis Window helps users to quickly identify where the bottleneck is. From a high level Business Application View, users can know which business application is currently affected and know what the problem is quickly. For example, users can know that the CRM Application has an Oracle database whose tablespace is reaching a critical thresholds and will run out of space etc.
