2  If you are interested in the aspects of health, care of others or would like to consider a career in health and care, this subject is designed for you.  The subject will give you a good knowledge about the human body and how it works.

3  It will give you the opportunity to develop communication skills to improve positive relationships and share information with people using services, their families, carers, colleagues and other professionals.  Also this subject will give learners a basic understanding of first aid in order to help a person in need or prevent further damage in the event of an accident or injuries.  This subject also explores the rights of individuals to be treated equally, with dignity and respect.

4 Many students prefer to choose vocational subjects because these subjects are different from other subjects. Students are active learners; Perform more hands-on practical work. Tasks are based on real-world problem-solving First-hand learning closely related to work On-site visits to a nursery, residential home, hospital, etc. enables learners to put all their classroom learning into practice. Written assignments- learners apply knowledge learnt from the lesson to complete the assignments given. On-going assessment

6 Students will: Understand how the human body works; Become aware of the different organs present in the body, the major body systems and the fact that body systems work together in keeping the body healthy. Explore how to take and read basic clinical measurements such as temperature, pulse and respiration rate and blood pressure. Become aware of the needs of individuals that are needed for holistic health and social care throughout the life stages. Learn about the importance of eating a balanced diet and the effects of an unbalanced diet and physical exercise on an individual’s health.

7 Students will: Learn about different forms and barriers of communication. Be aware about good communication skills to develop positive relationships and share information with people using services, their families, carers, colleagues and more. Develop appropriate interpersonal (social) skills. Develop knowledge of the hazards and risks that could occur on the work place. Dangers will be controlled to ensure a safe environment. Become aware of relevant legislation and the use and process of risk assessment on the field of work. Learn a basic understanding of first aid. 8 Students will: Understand diversity in health and social care and its impact, both positive and negative, upon equality in terms of access and treatment. Explore the rights of individuals to be treated equally, with dignity and respect. Become aware that in a multi-cultural society different groups will have different values, preferences and beliefs. Due to multiculturalism, students will learn the importance of respecting every individual’s requirements and adjust their practice to accommodate these preferences wherever possible as non-judgmental as possible and have unconditional positive regard for their service users. Students will: Understand diversity in health and social care and its impact, both positive and negative, upon equality in terms of access and treatment. Explore the rights of individuals to be treated equally, with dignity and respect. Become aware that in a multi-cultural society different groups will have different values, preferences and beliefs. 9 Health and social care has a DIFFERENT WAY of assessment (-rather than depend on the 2 hour exam at the end of Form 5 - you are assessed throughout the 3 years) Each unit/ year students will be assessed by three assessment components 30% Take home assignment component 30% Practical assessment 40% Controlled assessment (written test done in school per year at the time stipulated by MATSEC board)

10  All take home assignments and Practicals are to be internally verified by the second teacher knowing how the system works.  Controlled assessment’s paper will be set by MATSEC board.  At the end of the third year all marks will be calculated and a final mark is given to the student.  According to the % achieved the students can be given : Grade 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 or U

11 Opportunities offered by the subject As a subject it can go very well with any combination of subjects. eg. Sciences leading to doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists etc Any one thinking of working with children e.g. teachers, kinder assistants, LSA.... Any one thinking of having his own business place - the laws and safety aspects discussed in this topic will also prepare such students for whatever future they are planning.

12  It is a SEC and will be considered as one in all 6th forms, MCAST and ITS or any where else asking for O‘ levels.  It can be taken at Level 4 in MCAST where they train the students to work in health and social care areas.  One can reach level 6 (degree level) if they continue the subject.
