 In the beginning was DOS (Disc Operating System).  You might see a little bit of DOS when you first turn the power on to your computer. When you first turn the computer on, the computer goes through a process know as POST ( Power On Self Test ). It is using the BIOS ( Basic Input Output System ) to check itself to make sure that it can start up (or boot) properly. If there is a problem, the computer will tell you at this stage….

Microsoft windows is the computer’s operating system and loaded after the POST. Each programmer is opened in a rectangle or “window”’ Window is know as a Graphical User Interface or GUI.

Hardware Software Liveware Firmware BIOS

Computer programs & application are software. They enable the computer to do the tasks we need. software Application software System software Operating software Programming software Utility software  Word processors  Spread sheet  Database application  Media players

Software is usually issued with its own unique identification number, affixed to the protective case or manual cover of the product. The license specifies to whom the software is resisted & for how many users. To exceed the number of users is illegal. To copy, share, lend or distribute software CDs or diskettes out side of the license agreement is illegal. Software license freeware shareware Multi user Sole user

MEMORY PERMANENT MEMORYTEMPORARY MEMORY Computer memory that can retain the stored information even when not powered.. Eg:ROM When the computer is turned off or restarted anything held in the temporary memory will be lost…. Eg:RAM

You can create a computer filling system that replicates a traditional metal filling cabinet complete with the equivalent of drawers & hanging file to easily locate your documents. Each filling cabinet is a large memory know as a “drive” Eg; the hard drive “C:/” The drawers are know as “folders” & the files as ”sub folders.:

Two or more computers connected together is called a NETWORK. Network computers can share information & resources. The biggest NETWORK is the internet. Businesses often set up a central computer or “server” to which the other networked computers are set.

Type of computers..Comments……… Mainframe computer Big, powerful & expensive. Used by large organizations’ Huge capacity, very powerful, very fast. Network computerCost effective way of connecting two or more personal computers. Used by different users @ home, school or office to the grandest scale of internet. Personal computerLarge capacity. Affordable way for individuals to work electronically. Laptop computerCosting more than a PC, its fast, portable, large capacity & convenience. Great for education & business Personal digital computer (PDA) A pocket size computer. Small capacity, less speed, relatively expensive., contain a wireless fax modem. You can enter & access data, appointments, phone numbers using a special pen.

Tasks involve larger amount of memory. Eg: graphic designer / video editor. Tasks are repetitive. Eg: Data entry operator, Tasks involve complex calculations. Eg: Accountant / financial controller Tasks incorporate decision making. Eg: President / Director / CEO Tasks involve caring. Eg: Mother / Doctor / Nurse Tasks involve human interaction Eg: Teacher / Lecturer
