5 Juvenile Crime & Investigations
The School Resource Unit is tasked with investigating all crimes that occur while school is in session. Alcohol and Drug Possession Tobacco Possession Weapons possession Bullying and Harassment Sexting Larceny Traffic and Parking issues Missing/Runaway Juveniles

6 Juvenile Crime & Investigations
The School Resource Unit works closely with the Criminal Investigations Section Juvenile / Sex Crimes Unit Gang Unit Vice / Narcotics Unit Homeland Security

7 Missing/Runaway Juveniles
The Road Patrol officer will take the initial police report for the missing child it will then be forwarded to the SRO Unit The School Resource Unit investigates all students, over the age of 12, who are reported as missing. The SRO assigned to the school where the student attends will be the one responsible to do any follow up investigation.

8 Missing/Runaway Juveniles
The SRO will be responsible to fill out all the proper forms Missing person clearinghouse form Wanted / Missing Posters Notifying the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Check to see if the juvenile was entered into NCIC/VCIN correctly

9 Missing/Runaway Juveniles
The SRO will also conduct an interview with the student after they have been found to find out any information as to where they were, and with who they were with. The SRO will ensure the juvenile has been removed from NCIC/VCIN.

10 SRO Unit The School Resource Unit is a proactive unit that:
Interacts with students and school staff on a daily basis Works closely with administrators, school based counselors, substance abuse specialists, resource assistants, etc. Teaches classes to students about: drugs / alcohol use driving instruction Too Smart to Start classes at the elementary school level Internet safety

11 SRO Unit The SRO Unit is responsible for security at large school events, such as: Plays and concerts held at the school Proms and other dances held at the school or another location Pep Rallies, Parades, & Assemblies Large outside group rentals of school property Sporting events

12 SRO Unit The SRO’s may be tasked with assisting Federal Agencies to coordinate a visit from influential people to the school

13 SRO Unit Assists school’s Attendance Specialist
Briefs school Administrators regarding students involved in criminal activities outside of school hours Serves Detention & court Orders Provides coverage for significant incidents after school hours and weekends

14 SRO Unit The School Resource Unit is also a community policing unit:
PTA Meeting Civic Meeting School Meeting Administration Staff Counseling Staff Teachers Ed Center employees County Meeting Other county agencies

15 SRO Unit The School Resource unit also coordinates running the patrol camp The Patrol Camp is a AAA sponsored summer camp for children Teaches student crossing guards to work in a safe manner Activities include: K9 demos Fire Department presentation Local tours of museums or other places of interest

Most exterior doors in the public school are marked with a number, as well as a corresponding number on the interior. The # 1 Door is the main door to the building. The numbers go up as you go clockwise around the school. Not all doors will have a number but all main doors will.

18 Secure the School Procedure
When a police incident of a dangerous nature is taking place outside in the community but near school grounds All students who are outside will be brought in by school staff All exterior doors will be locked and secured by school staff School operations will continue inside as if it was a normal day A member of the school resource unit will respond to the building to act as a point of contact for incident command

19 Secure the School Procedure
When incident command gives the “all clear” the SRO will contact the principal who will release the school from the “Secure the School” by PA announcement If the situation dictates, the school can change from “Secure the School” to a Lockdown It CANNOT change from a Lockdown to a “Secure the School”

20 Lockdown Procedures The SRO unit is responsible for training the school staff in lockdown procedures Each school is required to perform two lockdowns each school year, one in September and another in January Lockdown drills are conducted by the SRO unit with assistance from other police units

21 Lockdown Procedures All Arlington Public School teachers & staff are taught the following procedures for lockdowns. P.L.L.Q. The “P” stands for Placard which they will have on either the window of the door or the door itself. GREEN means everyone is OK in the room RED means there is a life threating emergency in the room

22 Lockdown Procedures The “L” means lock. All teachers and staff are instructed to lock the door to their classroom and office area The second “L” means Lights. All lights in a classroom or office will be turned off. The “Q” means quiet. Teachers ,staff, and students have been instructed to remain silent at all times while in a lockdown.

23 Lockdown Procedures All teachers and staff have been advised to disregard the fire alarm during a lockdown.

24 SRO Unit Elementary Schools currently do not have an on-site SRO.
Principals are instructed to call the SRO Callback number if they need assistance or ECC The SRO callback number is not intended to be used for emergency calls such as an active shooter, etc should be called : SRO callback number
