Learning Event Description:
This learning event provides subscriber unit users an introduction to their unit, its basic operation, and the job aids available for assistance in operation. This is accomplished through the use of video clips, instructor facilitation, and hands-on activities whereby users are able to perform common tasks associated with unit operation.

Upon completion, the participant should be able to employ the toolkit resource needed to accomplish an operational task.

Turn Radio On:
Turn the Volume/Power Knob clockwise
When the ASTRO XTL 1500 Digital Mobile Radio is turned on the display shows XTL 1500.
The radio then performs a self-check. You hear a high-pitched tone indicating the radio has passed the self-check.
Turn Radio Off:
Turn the Volume Knob counter clockwise to turn the radio off.
Notes:
If FAIL ##/## appears in the display, the radio will not function until the condition has been corrected.
If any problem occurs, the display shows an error code ERROR ##/##.

To set the volume:
Rotate the Volume/Power Knob clockwise to increase the volume and counterclockwise to decrease the volume.

To transmit on a Conventional Mode:
Lift the microphone off-hook, and listen for activity on that mode.
If you hear no activity, press and hold the microphone PTT button.
Release the PTT button to receive.

If you hear a continuous low-pitched tone, you are out of the system's range. The red XMIT indicator may flash several times as the radio tries to access the system.
Release the PTT button and try again when the vehicle is within range of the system.
Release the PTT button to receive.
To Transmit on a Trunked Mode:
Lift the microphone off-hook. Press and hold the microphone PTT button.
If you hear the permit to talk tone and the red XMIT (transmit) indicator lights steadily, proceed with your message.
If you hear a busy tone and the yellow Busy indicator flashes, all trunked channels are in use.
Release the PTT button and wait for the three quick tones. Within three seconds of hearing these tones, press and hold the PTT button to transmit your message.

11. Zone and Mode Select/Change

To Select a Zone:
Press below Zone. Press the PTT button to begin transmitting on the zone and mode. Due to an 8 character display limitation, the zone name will not be displayed, only the 8 character mode name will be displayed.
To Select a Mode:
To select a particular mode within a zone, rotate the Mode Knob until the desired mode is displayed.
Note:
If you select a zone that is out of range, you will hear a low-pitched tone. Select a different zone.

12. Emergency Call (Initiate)

To Initiate an Emergency Call:
Press the emergency button.
A tone sounds and the display alternates EMERGENCY with the current zone/channel.
Mic will be open for 10 secs; announce your emergency. After 10 secs press the PTT button to continue your emergency traffic.
After completing the emergency call, press and hold the Emergency button for one second to clear the emergency.
The alternating EMERGENCY display disappears, and the radio returns to normal operation.
Note: Emergency call will revert to the emergency channel. Mic will be open for 10 seconds.
Note: You must clear the emergency before changing modes or you will continue sending emergency alarms
Emergency Call
Emergency call gives you priority access to a voice channel for all subsequent transmissions after you press the emergency button. The level of priority access is determined by the system manager.
SmartZone® Emergency Call Receive Operation
A radio configured for SmartZone operation displays EMER RECEIVED whenever it receives an emergency call. The display alternates with the selected-mode display as long as the radio is unmuted to the emergency call.

13. Transmit Power Level Select

To select the Transmit Power Level:
Press below PWR.
The display momentarily shows POWER LOW or POWER HIGH to indicate the transmit power level selected. Press to select power level.
Note: All mobiles radios are programmed to default to low
power. When in fringe areas, select high power.

In a SmartZone system, to check which site the radio has currently selected:
Momentarily press the preprogrammed RSSI button.
The current site name and RSSI (receive signal strength indicator) are displayed momentarily
Press the button momentarily and the radio will display the current site and the RX signal strength is a numerical form.
Press and hold the button to force the radio to scan for the next available site. Radio will display scan site and RSSI value.
If you are aware that weak signals are common to particular areas, use the SmartZone lock function to prevent the radio from automatically scanning for a new site.

Due to our mode of operation for Priority Traffic, Scan will always be on.
Press below PROG to modify scan list. You can add and delete added TG’s to scan list but scan will always be on. You must remove TG from scan list if not desired to be scan.
The Scan indicator lights and a list of modes is scanned for activity.
When a scanned mode becomes active, the display shows the active mode name, the appropriate priority indicator lights, and the radio unmutes.

This feature allows you to monitor channel traffic on conventional channels by defeating the coded squelch.
To monitor in conventional mode:
Press the preprogrammed Monitor button.
This toggles between MON ON and MON OFF. MON ON shown on the display indicates that the radio is monitoring.
Monitor is only available while in the conventional mode.

20. Direct Talkaround (Mobile Radio to Mobile Radio)

To talk directly to another unit without going through the repeater system:
Press below DIR momentarily
The Dir indicator lights, indicating that the radio is now transmitting directly to another unit.
To return to repeater operation, press below DIR again.

Note:
A conventional channel can be configured to always transmit on the direct mobile-to mobile frequency. In this case, the Dir indicator is lit continuously while the mode is selected.
A conventional personality can be configured to always transmit on the direct mobile-to-mobile frequency. In this case, the Dir indicator is lit continuously while the mode is selected.
