Anne Boleyn 1507- May 9, 1536

Early Life Anne Boleyn was born in England sometime between 1507-1509 to Elizabeth Howard and Thomas Boleyn. She was the youngest of 3 children, her siblings were Mary Boleyn and George Boleyn. In 1513 her parents sent her to live at the Hapsburg court to serve as the regent of Margaret of Austria. She quickly learned French and became fascinated by Margaret. In June of 1520 there was a famous meeting between the French and English kings, this is where it is believed that Henry VIII saw Anne for the first time. In late 1521 she returned to England to fascinate the English court.

Personality Anne was a very talented and intelligent woman, she could read and write in both English and French. She was also great in pastimes, like, dancing, singing, and acting. She created her own clothing, which most ladies of her time copied. She was gifted at music and writing poetry and loved archery, hunting, and falconry. Being so young, she also took interest in running the country. She can be described as witty, quick-tempered, stubborn and ambitious. Most people of her time hated her for ruining the marriage between Catherine and King Henry so they described her as the “opposite of Tudor beauty” and that she had a sixth finger and a large mole on her neck.

Marriage to Henry VIII In about 1525 Henry VIII fell in love with Anne and wanted her to become his mistress. Anne refused, this started a chain of events which eventually led to the Roman Catholic Church breaking away from England. There are a few theories as to why Anne refused him, one was that Henry played a role in denying her marriage to her true love, Henry Percy. Another reason was that Anne’s sister Mary, was also having an affair with King Henry. Anne wanted to become Queen so to make sure Henry didn’t lose interest she became pregnant with his child and they secretly got married in January 1533, in the fall to Henry’s disappointment Anne gave birth to a girl, Elizabeth I.

Marriage to Henry VIII Right after they got married, he divorced Catherine and sent her to live in exile from the court. Henry and Anne expected to be happy now but this was not true, Henry started losing interest in Anne and realized how much he gave up for her. After 3 years Henry fell in love with someone else, he knew it would look bad if he divorced Anne after all the trouble he went through to be with her. So, Henry and his advisors made false adultery charges against Anne, she was found guilty and executed in May of 1536.
