2 Conceptual Definitions Distinguish stereotype, prejudice, discrimination from each other: Prejudice = Stereotype = Discrimination = – Affective, Behavioral, Cognitive components? – Groups can be ingroups (our own groups) or outgroups (groups other than our own)

3 Racism Distinction between overt & modern racism – Overt racism = explicit (name-calling) – Now, ‘modern racism’ is more likely Modern racism = implicit and subtle (exclusion) – Implicit vs. Explicit processing How can we measure each of these?

4 Implicit Attitudes – Use of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to assess How is it done? – Preferences for our own vs. other groups:

5 – Differences in IAT for attitudes learned early/late in life: – Effects of implicit bias – on outgroup perceptions What is outgroup homogeneity?
