SOLAS Background Industry reacted against the existing text in 2003 IMO Assembly (Dec 2003) agreed to update the texts of Reg 3.6 & TP Proposals from : Greece Industry  : BIMCO, IGS, INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO & OCIMF IACS Korea DE 47 (25th Feb to 5th March 2004) started to work

2 General Technical Specifications SOLAS Amended Reg II-1/3.6 Access through Horizontal openings, hatches or manholes : Minimum clear opening 600 x 600 mm & Corner radii up to 100 mm Max (IACS Interp.) Access through Vertical openings or manholes  : Minimum clear opening 600 x 800 mm May include corner radii up of 300 mm (IACS Interp.) Alternative to traditional opening (850x620) (IACS Interp.) Subject to verification of easy evacuation of injured person on a stretcher Height > 600 mm Steps & handgrips It should be demonstrated that an injured person can be easily evacuated 5.3 For oil tankers of less than 5,000 tonnes deadweight, the Administration may approve, in special circumstances, smaller dimensions for the openings referred to in paragraphs 5.1 and 5.2, if the ability to traverse such openings or to remove an injured person can be proved to the satisfaction of the Administration. 39 WHAT IS “BULK” SOFTWARE
3 IACS URS 31 WHAT IS “BULK” SOFTWARE BULK has been conceived to help owners and designers to assess the compliance of their single side skin bulk carriers of 150 m in length or above, with the IACS ship’s structural requirements. Based on a very user-friendly platform under Windows environment, BULK will provide the User with a comprehensive view of compliance with the new strength criteria. The Unified Requirements have already been included in BV Rules.

41 HOW THE “BULK” SYSTEM WORKS
3 IACS URS 31 HOW THE “BULK” SYSTEM WORKS This pre-calculation is carried out with the software “Bulk” which has been specifically designed for the purpose of: calculating the minimum required thicknesses before the survey is started allowing the Surveyor to take appropriate actions during the survey, with respect to steel renewal or repairs or reinforcements of the frames and brackets, by comparing the measured thicknesses on-board to the pre-calculated thicknesses. The calculation sheets are then sent to the SHIPOWNER and to the SURVEY CENTRE, when known, in advance of the survey. One calculation sheet is available for each frame which has been pre- calculated. The calculation sheet also indicates the concerned hold No. for each pre-calculated frame.
