Introduction

2 Learning Outcomes Understand concepts of equality, diversity and rights in relation to health and social care. Know discriminatory practices in health and social care. Understand how national initiatives promote anti-discriminatory practice. Know how anti-discriminatory practice is promoted in health and social care settings.

3 What is Equality? Being equal, especially in rights, status or opportunities. All individuals should be treated equally, and there are laws in place to ensure that this happens. In accordance with the law, organisations have equality policies to ensure that everyone is treated equally. (Stretch and Whitehouse 2010 pg: 48)

4 What is Diversity? Recognising that people are different from one another and they have their own unique individuality, personality, identity and social and cultural background. Ask the group – small group task – define diversity. To paper Need to provide paper and pens. Diversity questionnaire – individual task sheets Feedback to whole group Proverbs exercise Feedback to group Give out assignment whole task sheet. Allow students time to read and digest and to ask any questions Explain next session

5 What are Rights? Rights are legal entitlements. For example, an individual has the right to live in society without being abused or intimidated because of their gender sexuality race skin colour beliefs or culture. (Stretch and Whitehouse 2010 pg: 48)
