ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Transfer Admission Overview

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 UC Admission Requirements 60 semester/90 quarter units Seven-course pattern: ● 2 UC-transferable English composition courses ● 1 UC-transferable math course ● 4 courses from at least 2 of 3 subject areas ○Arts and Humanities ○Social & Behavioral sciences ○Physical & Biological Sciences Minimum 2.40 GPA

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses that prepare students for upper division coursework. ●Students are only admitted to selective majors if they have completed the supplementary courses and earned grades required for the major. ●For some campuses and programs, major preparation courses may be a higher priority than general education courses. Students will need to research the major preparation needed for the campuses for which they are planning to apply. ●Major preparation courses can be found on ASSIST.org. Major Preparation

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 ●The UC application filing period is November 1-30. ●After November 30th, students receive a request to submit updates through the Transfer Application Update (TAU) link. ●Fall grades and winter/spring planned courses must be submitted by January 31. ● Once the update is received, the application will be evaluated. 14 ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Tools

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 ASSIST.org Provides the most accurate and up- to-date information for California transfer students. Shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferring to another. Explore majors available at UC and CSU campuses. Official repository of articulation for California’s colleges and universities.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Transfer Course Agreement (TCA) Identifies UC-transferable courses at each CCC. First level of articulation between UC and CCC; all courses listed are transferable to every UC campus. Individual UC campuses may, as appropriate, articulate courses to specific lower-division courses/ graduation requirements.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 CCC to UC Major Articulation Agreements The CCC-UC Major Articulation Agreements offer students guidance in preparing for specific majors at each UC campus. Second level of articulation between UC and CCC. Indicates courses that fulfill major prep; alerts if IGETC is acceptable; explains use of AP/IB credit toward subject requirements, etc.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Submission of UC systemwide admission policies, practices, and procedures questions. Campus-specific questions should be sent to the campus contacts. AskUC@ucop.edu

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Basic Evaluation Rules

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 The Review Process The UC Evaluation of the Academic Record After the Transfer Academic Update (TAU) is received the review begins (fall grades, work in progress/planned). Evaluators review the applicant’s self-reported courses and grades term by term to determine whether the courses are UC-transferable and to derive a cumulative GPA.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Gaps In Education UC evaluators review begin and end dates of attended institutions. Any gaps in education will require an explanation. Name/LocationSchool CodeTypeBegin/End Dates Language of Instruction Fitzgerald HS Santa Maria, CA 989340Pub HS08/2009- 06/2012 English **Potential Gap in Education** Santa Barbara CC Santa Barbara, CA 004690CCC/2yr08/2013- 05/2014 English

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Language of Instruction The high school’s Language of Instruction determines whether credit is awarded for lower division language courses. Name/LocationSchool CodeTypeBegin/End Dates Language of Instruction Shanghai Southwest H.S. Shanghai, China 990010Prv HS09/2006- 06/2010 Chinese East Los Angeles College All Locations, CA 004296CCC/2yr08/2010 - 06/2014 English

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Exam Credit—AP or IB AP and IB Credit: Credit may be awarded: Up to 8 quarter (5.3 semester) units per exam may be awarded. Credit limitations may apply in some subject areas, and when exams and equivalent courses are taken. Toward major prep and GE with AP scores of 3 or higher or IB Higher Level scores of 5 or higher. (Course equivalencies depend on campus articulation) Toward IGETC requirements refer to: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/CC11_UsingAPfor Admission_final.pdf Examinations Test TypeTest NameScoreDate APEnglish Language305/2010 APEnglish Lit & Comp405/2011

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Non-transferable Courses For California Community Colleges, check TCA on ASSIST.org. Evaluators will determine if a course is transferable based on UC guidelines and TCAs (for CCCs)

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses with credit limitations: PE, ESL, Math, Science Example: ESL max 8 sem/12 quarter units Credit Limitations

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses Taken Out of Sequence Sequential Knowledge areas: Math, Chemistry, LOTE Example: Student takes College Algebra after taking Calculus I

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Unit Limits: AR, NP, NG, W Example: Academic Renewal

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Repeated Coursework Example: Student repeated Intro to Art and College Algebra

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Occurs when student has passed a course with a grade of C or better and takes it again later Example: Student takes American Govt at SBCC in Fall’12 and takes it again at Santiago Canyon College in Fall’13 Duplication of Credit

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Lower Division Unit Maximum Limitation All lower division (freshman/sophomore level) coursework will be limited to a maximum of 70 semester (or 105 quarter) units toward the UC degree, regardless of the type of institution where the credit was earned (2 or 4yr). UC courses (LD/UD) are not subject to this limitation. AP/IB credits do not count toward this limitation. Transferable units beyond this limit earn subject credit only. Fact Sheet: UC Maximum Transfer Credit Limitation Policy http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/uc- transfer-maximum-limitation-policy-chart.pdf

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Example 1: Lower Division Unit Max San Diego State University coursework plus City College of San Francisco coursework with only lower division units 15 semester LD units SDSU +60 semester LD units CCSF 75 semester LD units -5 excess LD units 70 semester units awarded by UC

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Example 2: Lower Division Unit Max Santa Monica College coursework, plus the Santa Clara University coursework, and with both lower and upper division units 60 semester LD units SMC +3 semester LD units SCU 63 semester LD units +17 semester UD units SCU 80 semester units awarded by UC

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Example 3: Lower Division Unit Max Modesto Junior College coursework plus UC Merced coursework (applying to transfer to a different UC campus) 76.5 semester LD units MJC - 6.5 excess LD units 70 semester LD units + 16 semester UD units UCM 86 semester units awarded by UC

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 International Work All international work (courses and exam results) must be reported, whether or not the student wants to receive credit. Generally, UC evaluators are looking for whether or not the coursework taken is at a college/university is recognized by the Ministry of Education and offers university level academic degree program courses comparable to a U.S. associate’s or bachelor’s degree. If it is, we review courses on a course by course basis for transferability.
