2 PITT COUNTY DEMOGRAPHICS Race/Ethnicity 58.9 % White 34.1% African Americans 5.5% Hispanic or Latino origin Poverty 25.5 % live below poverty level Fewer than one in four Pitt County adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily More than one in four Pitt County adults eat fast foods four or more times per week Greenville is ranked #1 among United states cities with fast food density.

3 HEALTHY CORNER STORE BENEFITS Accessibility of fresh fruits and vegetables for underserved populations located in food deserts throughout Pitt County Support local farmers Nutrition Education/Taste Testing for customers Provides community support to the stores Economic improvements Building partnerships with owners and farmers

4 PILOT CORNER STORE BENEFITS Pilot Store Owner is an advocate model for other store owners Developing strategies and assessment tools To be used for other stores Modify strategies and/or assessments

5 PARTNERS IN STEERING COMMITTEE Corner Store Owners Local Farmer Representative East Carolina University North Carolina Department Agriculture (NCDA) Assistant Marketing Director Active Living By Design Logistics of Steering Committee Meets periodically to discuss any challenges or successes.

6 SUSTAINING FRESH FOOD IN CORNER STORES Looking at policies to encourage more stores to have fresh foods Zoning Economic Development (providing incentives to the store owners) Work with City Council on public safety near corner stores Expanding Steering Committee to Role Building Community Involvement Connecting Community Gardens to this process
