1 Read and Eat Description: Read and Eat encourages the eating of five or more fresh fruits and vegetables a day, and facilitates parents reading to their children daily. Each week students receive fresh produce with an activity worksheet for children and parents to work on together (“A is for Apple”, “B is for Banana” etc.). Through NPN, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee will access fresh fruits and produce as the program at the four target elementary schools, Kirkpatrick (Year 1), Warner (Year 2), Ross (Year 3), and East End Preparatory School (Year 4), to serve 1492 pre-kindergarten 3-year-olds to 5th grade students and their families annually. In 2011, with the support of Bank of America, lead agency MOBC hired a new chef to design a Health Lunch Program for MOBC’s Early Learning Center and East End Preparatory School. This is a pilot program for other schools in NPN, to support better nutrition for all children. A is for Apple O is for Orange

2 NPN target area=“Food Desert” Segmentation Analysis The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (2010) has identified the NPN targeted area as a “food desert,” referring to a high- poverty area that it is geographically isolated from a full-service grocery store and that has a large percentage of residents without access to a car or public transportation. 80% of parents/guardians in target school communities report children have fewer than 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
