WRITING TIPS -No “I believe” “I feel” “I think” -Keep a formal tone -Substitute words like “we” “you” with “people” “one” -Avoid slang and cliché phrases like “It’s a safe bet…” AVOID DEAD WORDS: a lotvery things/stuffno contractions - Always a good idea to mention the genre of the text in the intro(i.e. the short story, the online article, etc.) - When choosing quotes… - Your quotes should reinforce your ideas, not the other way around

Homework  Make sure you have selected the main ideas for your three body paragraphs **they are in your thesis statement**  Begin shaping your thoughts about each of the main ideas – what do you want to say in response to the prompt –  Select quotes from the novel to SUPPORT YOUR THOUGHTS  Yes – write down your brainstorming to bring to class tomorrow (it can be bubble cluster, t-chart, outline, etc.)

Some thoughts on theme

Let’s look at a phone message situation Situation 1 Mom : oh, jimbob, you have a phone message. Jimbob : oh okay thanks mama. What is it? Mom : it’s that melvin. Jimbob : melvin what? Mom : just melvin? Jimbob : mom, what about melvin? Mom : just melvin. Jimbob : ugh mom, learn to take a message!

Let’s look at a phone message situation Situation 2 Mom : oh, jimbob, you have a phone message. Jimbob : oh okay thanks mama. What is it? Mom : it’s that melvin wants to go cow tipping tonight. Jimbob : oh that again? We did that last Friday night. I’ll call him back.

Let’s look at a mom’s message like THEME Situation 1 Mom : oh, jimbob, you have a message from the author that you should learn. It applies to the book you read but also real life. Jimbob : oh okay thanks mama. What is it? Mom : it’s that censorship. Jimbob : censorship what? Mom : just censorship? Jimbob : mom, what about censorship? What do I need to learn about it? Mom : just censorship. Jimbob : ugh mom, learn to describe theme!

Let’s look at a phone message situation Situation 2 Mom : oh, jimbob, you have a message from the author that you should learn. It applies to the book you read but also real life. Jimbob : oh okay thanks mama. What is it? Mom : it’s that censorship of any degree limits creative and productive thought Jimbob : oh cool mom. I’ll make sure to protect the freedom of speech in our country and voice my opinion on important ideas.

Check Yours….  If your prompt calls for including theme – which most do in one way or another – be sure you have an appropriate theme statement

Body Paragraph Sample When I went into labor at 25 weeks, I had to go to the place I hate most, the hospital. The last time I had been in a hospital was when my grandpa broke his hip. He was supposed to be healed in a week but never recovered and passed away. I remembered his situation and how the emergency brought sadness and pain. Walking into Anaheim Memorial brought forth fear for myself and emotions that I wasn’t prepared to deal with. Hospitals have a very distinct atmosphere – the smell of disinfectant and fake strawberry shampoo mixed with beeping crash-carts moving down the halls. This scene makes me want to vomit. All I feel when I am there is panic and confusion. The thought that there will be a terrible ending is consuming. When I was put in a hospital bed and hooked up to monitors, I knew I wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon.

Choosing Quotes  A general rule is 8 words or less  Should be something that you could not say any better if you tried  Example – Montag’s Change  Not a good choice – “I’m not going to work tonight.”  Better choice – “ He pressed the pain in his eyes…”  Even better - “A child feigning illness…” OR “The parlor roared in the hot air.”

No Hanging Quotes  Don’t leave quotes to die on their own – surround them with the comfort of your words  Example 1:  Montag began to change. For example, “A child feigning illness…” This quote means that….  THIS STINKS!  Example 2:  Montag’s change is put in action by the old lady’s death. Unable to cope with what he and the other firemen had done, he acts like a “A child feigning illness…” and wants Mildred to call in sick for him.  YAY! This is better

NOW YOU TRY  You are going to write one body paragraph to your essay  Hopefully you can finish today – if you don’t, it’s for homework  Tomorrow, I’ll randomly pick a few to show the class – YES!!!  Wednesday will be a work day for body paragraphs
