Persuasive writing is… An essay that tries to convince the reader to believe what you believe about a topic. If you follow these steps you will write an effective persuasive paper.

Choose an effective topic. 2. Research the topic you have chosen. 3. Write down three facts to support your position. 4. Look for three counter arguments. 5. Determine the audience you are writing for. 6. Write an effective Thesis Statement and support it.

6 Choosing a Topic To begin a persuasive essay, you must first have an opinion on a topic that you want others to share your opinion.

Gun Control Legalization of Marijuana Public Execution Abortion Homework

8 Research To be valid, an opinion or point of view must be supported by facts and information. Once you know what you will write about, you will need to do research on the topic. Research through interviewing people, or reading newspaper, book, journal, or Internet articles.

10 Writing for your Audience
When writing you need to know your audience. Answer the following questions when you are deciding your audience: How much does the audience know about the topic? Is the audience going to be for or against the topic? How do you “Hook” the audience?

The Persuasive: Write an effective introduction with a “hook”. This is your chance to engage the reader. This is where you put in your Thesis Statement, Your Argument. Write your three body paragraphs. Each of your body paragraphs will have one of your arguments supporting your position. This is also a time to refute the opposing view. Write a conclusion that will leave a lasting impression on the reader. Don’t introduce new information

18 What Not to do in Your Persuasive Essay
* Never use “I”. * Never state the opposing view is “Stupid”. * Keep opinions out of your paper.
