5 PRECEDENT An act or decision that sets an example for others to follow FOR EXAMPLE: George Washington said he would only run for TWO TERMS because any more would give someone too much power. Presidents followed his EXAMPLE or PRECENT for more than 125 years! FDR broke this tradition!

6 TARIFF A tax on ALL foreign goods brought into this country

7 REPUBLIC A nation in which VOTERS elect representatives to govern them

8 FACTION This is when OPPOSING GROUPS within political parties do NOT agree and ONE of the groups breaks off Causes MAJOR problems for the party MOST are more interested in PERSONAL gain rather than PUBLIC GOOD This cartoon demonstrates the intense factional fighting in President John Adams’s administration (1797-1801)

9 IMMIGRANT A person who enters another country for the purpose of settling there.

10 UNCONSTITUTIONAL A law that is NOT permitted by the Constitution NO State or branch of Congress can make a law which GOES AGAINST the Constitution X

11 POLITICAL PARTIES A group of people who have similar political beliefs and JOIN TOGETHER to support a certain individual. They work together to get their CANIDATES elected. A party convention! A graph of the political parties from U.S. history!
