Tours, 20 June 2002 Field Programmable Analog Arrays: The New Art of Analog Signal Processing CRESITT Industrie Seminar Andreas Kramer

The Anadigm Mission To remove the complexity from the analog design process To reduce the time required for analog design implementations from months to minutes To enable reconfigurability, updating and adaptation of analog functions In short, to give the industry an analog equivalent to the FPGA

Analog Design Today Until now, analog design has required a high level of expertise Analog functions have been left in the cold as software-centric systems are developed and verified with powerful and complex design tools The absence of an analog equivalent to the FPGA has kept analog out of the system- level dialogue between providers of digital components, tools, and EDA systems

The Anadigm Vision The design process becomes simple enough that non-specialists can create circuits that would require weeks or months of design work with discretes or ASICs Analog functions can interact with other parts of the system through software – and be adjusted in C-code, just like digital functions Reprogrammability of analog components allows control, updating, and manipulation of devices within the system

Where Anadigm Fits in the Market Typical functions –Analog signal conditioning, control circuitry, sensory linearization, complex filters, analog front- end signal conditioning Typical markets and applications –Industrial/medical (PID systems, motor control, instrumentation, ATE, data acquisition systems, manufacturing and process control, sensor interfaces) –Telecom systems –Consumer audio

Profile: The Typical Anadigm Customer Plays in a wide range of analog signal processing frequency bandwidths (0 - 2 MHz), mains-powered market segments Has limited design sources Wants to save board space Wants to provide multiple tier products by complexity or capability Needs to provide the same base function in different enclosures or tailored for different environments or regions

Anadigm Technology Elements Design Software –AnadigmDesigner™ tools allow complex circuits to be designed with a simple drag-and-drop graphical interface Configurable Analog Modules –CAMs pre-package common analog functions, lifting designer above the component level to the functional level Silicon –FPAAs provide a configurable matrix environment to which designs can be downloaded for immediate testing and validation

FPAAs: The Reconfigurable Silicon 20 configurable analog blocks (CAB) 13 buffered I/O cells, 2 Aux buffers Programmable voltage reference 4 clock dividers SRAM based; reconfigurable Switched capacitor design VREF Configuration Logic

FPAA Configurable Analog Block (CAB) OpAmp/ Comparator Capacitor arrays Switches –Static –Dynamic Control logic 208 RAM bits/cell

The FPAA in the System Field programmable and reconfigurable

CAMs: The Functional Building Blocks More than 50 available Configurable Analog Modules, with more to come: Gain Stages Comperators Adder/Substractor Limiters Integrators/Differentiators Sample and hold modules Track and hold modules Waveform generator Rectifiers Filter: LP, HP, BP, BS single pole, Biquad

AnadigmDesigner: The Software The AnadigmDesigner suite of software embodies all the elements necessary to define, tune, simulate and download an analog sub- system In an interactive mode, the circuit can be downloaded to the development board and measured for system performance – immediately The iterative process of analog design is now reduced to seconds versus days and months

EDA Tools, Configurable Analog Modules (CAMs), and FPAA Silicon Anadigm Technology Elements
