SEWAGE COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL, EXCRETA DISPOSAL AND DRAINAGE

Only about 10% of sewage in the Philippines is treated or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. The rest goes back to nature – usually the sea. In this context of poor waste treatment and high population growth, water pollution is a growing problem for the country’s groundwater, rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. Polluting industrial material is also found in abandoned mining areas, with mercury pollution affecting water bodies in these areas. These problems are unfolding in a context of poor planning, and weak management and enforcement of regulations. World Bank. Philippines Environment. Accessed Nov 22 2009Philippines Environment

DEFINITION OF TERMS Public sewerage system – serves >25 people Septic tank – water tight receptacle which receives the discharge of a plumbing system House sewer – The pipe line conveying sewage from the house or building to the septic tank

Privy – structure which is not connected to a sewerage system and is used for the reception, disposition and storage of feces or other excreta from human body Ex. – Septic Privy – Box and Can – Concrete vault privy – Chemical privy

Septic Tanks -Most of the wastes especially in urban areas in the Philippines are disposed in septic tanks -Should be generally rectangular in shape -When a number of compartments are used, the first compartment shall have the capacity from ½ -2/3 of total volume of tank -Shall be built with concrete whether precast or poured in place -Shall not be constructed under any building within 25 meters from any source of water supply

As the waste collects in the tank the liquid and solids separate, and bacteria forms naturally to break down the majority of the solids. The liquid will eventually flow out through leach lines into a drain field of gravel, and then into the soil. The gravel and the soil act as a biological filter.

REFUSE DISPOSAL

“The waste crisis is worsening at a rapid rate. The national government has so far failed to provide and implement a wide-reaching and viable waste management program which can efficiently process and treat around 13 billion kilos of solid waste generated annually by around 89 million Filipinos,” – Kalikasan PNE National Coordinator Clemente Bautista Jr.

REFUSE – collective term for all solid waste products consisting of garbage, rubbish, night soils, ashes, dead animals, manure, street sweepings and industrial wastes

CITIES and MUNICIPALITIES – are responsible for providing an adequate and efficient means of collecting, transporting and disposing refuse in their areas of jurisdiction in a manner approved by the local health authority

Occupants of buildings and residences shall provide a sufficient number of receptacles for disposing refuse to prevent vermin infestation. Refuse shall not be thrown in any body of water, street, side walk, yard or park. It shall be stored in a suitable container. Streets shall be kept clean by owners of properties lining the street from the line of the property to the other Public places shall be kept clean by the local government
