 The Common Core Classroom Mathematical Practices and Computational Strategies May 2013 Fran Gibson

WELCOME!! Relax, Ponder, Question, Share

What does a 3 rd grader have to do in 2015?

So what kind of classroom should that 3 rd grader be in?

Standards for Mathematical Practice A road map for the classroom 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Administration Walkthrough  Identify Math Practice priority (student talk)  Assess strengths on the campus  Help strength teachers to reflect on practice (student talk)  Video classroom practice (student talk)  Interview strength teachers  Step by step plan with revision

Teacher Interviews

Use Collaboration Groups to Spread Strength  Option 1:  Focus all classrooms on strength area (student talk)  Show video at staff meeting  Collaboration groups discuss specifics at grade level  Grade levels set goals to implement in classroom until next collaboration  Grade levels identify data to bring back to collaboration based on grade level goals  Grade level identifies areas for support  Hand copy of goal sheet to principal

Grade Level Goal Setting

 In your groups:  Discuss the next steps for implementing student talk in your classroom  Identify student behaviors you will observe  Identify teacher behaviors necessary  Request any help needed  As a group, decide what progress data you will bring back to next collaboration

Use Collaboration Groups to Spread Strength  Option 2 (as resources are collected):  Grade level groups meet to collaborate  Discussion of the common core classroom identifies grade level area of need  Resources library used for group to watch a certain topic  Grade levels set goals to implement in classroom until next collaboration  Grade levels identify data to bring back to collaboration based on grade level goals  Grade level identifies areas for support  Hand copy of goal sheet to principal
