Middle School Family and Consumer Science and Middle School Technology Education Support Standards for Mathematical Practice

1.Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 2.Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3.Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 4.Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure 8.Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Family and Consumer Science

Examples from Family and Consumer Science which support the Standards for Mathematical Practice Make sense of problems – manipulate fractions to convert ingredient measurements and adjust recipe yield. Attend to precision - apply math skills to proper dry and liquid measuring techniques. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others – analyze the financial choices that people make based on available resources, needs, and wants for goods and services. Model with mathematics – develop financial goals based on personal values.

Technology Education

Examples of activities from Technology Education which support the Standards for Mathematical Practice Reason Abstractly and Quantitatively - select the right materials that can withstand the shear and bending load limits on structural elements and bridges. Construct viable Arguments and Critique the Reasoning of Others - design a process to make a vehicle move faster. Look For and Express Regularity in Repeated Reasoning - troubleshoot a design problem.
