Southern exposed hillside vineyards are at least 25 years old at elevations of 150 - 450 meters. Fermentation: Traditional red wine fermentation; 14 days including maceration. Aging: 3 years in Allier oak barrels; 12 months bottle aging. Il Poggione is one of the most highly regarded Brunello di Montalcino producers with a rich history and reputation for stylistic consistency. Since 1890, the Franceschi family has helped develop standards for the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino region as a founding member of the Brunello Consortium. Today, the winery continues its winemaking philosophy: To create wines of impeccable quality and style, enhanced by the use of organic substances and all-natural products. The winery's vineyards lie at one of the highest elevations in the entire appellation, ideal for the production of long-lived Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello). All of its wines are made using estate-grown fruit. WWW.TERLATOWINES.COM 94 94 pts “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is flat-out sexy. Layers of dark red fruit caress the palate in this round, voluptuous Brunello. Sweet roses, violets, mint and spices appear later, adding further complexity. The 2007 boasts striking inner perfume, radiant fruit and silky, super-refined tannins. Readers are going to have a hard time keeping their hands off this extraordinary wine.“ 2006 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RISERVA Varietal: 100% Sangiovese Vineyards: Tenuta Il Poggione “I Paganelli” vineyard in Sant’Angelo in Colle in the Montalcino DOCG zone. The seductive allure of the 2007 is nowhere to be found. Instead, the 2006 is built on a serious spine of formidable tannin and dark red/black fruit. Hints of tar, licorice, rose petals and tobacco inform the powerful, virile finish. The 2006 is going to require considerable patience, but it is clearly a jewel of a wine, even at this early stage.“ 2010 ROSSO DI MONTALCINO Variety 100% Sangiovese Vineyards Estate vineyards in Sant’ Angelo in Colle in the Montalcino DOCG zone. An elegant, expressive bouquet gives way to layers of vibrant fruit in this energetic, totally polished Rosso. After several years of experimenting with a more accessible style of Rosso, Il Poggione has moved back to making the firm, structured style of Rosso for which the estate is famous.”
