Objectives Locate specific places of importance on map of Texas Interpret information from a map Infer information from a map

Latitude Longitude

Providing Useful Directions Relative Location: the position of a place relative, or in comparison to, another place –Where something or somewhere is located in relation to something else Common everyday directions Absolute Location: the exact position of a place on the earth –Latitude and Longitude Very specific location on the earth Based on a grid system—imaginary lines that go across or up and down the earth

Absolute Location The location where the imaginary lines intersect or cross over each other is the absolute location Latitude: the location north or south of the equator (lines go side to side) Longitude: the location east or west of the prime meridian (lines go north to south) Degrees: the units of measurement to identify the coordinates…where the lines cross

Latitude The Earth is divided into parts –Hemispheres: ½ of the earth, divided by the equator into northern or southern halves Equator: imaginary line at 0° latitude that divides the earth into the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere…locations are labeled with a N for north of the equator or S for the south of the equator Lines of latitude go from side to side

Longitude Prime Meridian: the imaginary line at 0° longitude –Locations are labeled E for east of the prime meridian and W for west of the prime meridian –Lines of longitude go up and down
