FRESNO STATE Solid Waste Diversion
New solid waste contractor - IWS Started stateside services in 2013 Completed a waste audit to confirm that food waste/non- recyclable material was < 10% Converted all stateside non-Ag trash services to 100% comingled recycling 100% comingled recycling goes to a “MURF” (Municipal Recycling Facility) operated by IWS (i.e. Cedar Ave Recycling & Transfer Station or “CARTS”). All waste is mechanically & hand-sorted @ CARTS to remove all recyclable material What is left landfill.
2008 - 2014 Solid Waste Data 2008 - 2012 = Previous waste contract (separate trash & recycling bins). 2013 = May/2013 converted to single stream recycling (Stateside, non-Ag areas) 2014 = Single stream recycling continues (Stateside, non-Ag areas)
2013 Solid Waste Data Note: converted to single stream recycling in May 2013…
2014 Solid Waste Data
Challenges Community concerns remain about perceived lack of recycling Increased solid waste management costs Ensuring our non-recyclable material does not exceed 10% Moving towards ZERO waste
