Of First Importance… Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all (of 1 st importance- NASB) that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. 6 After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. 7 After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. 8 Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. 1 Cor. 15:1-8
A Serious Warning…To Christians We must get this gospel right! “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!” -Galatians 1:8
GOSPELGOSPEL THETHE 1.They must see their need for the Gospel. They must see they are sinful people before a Holy God. They are God’s enemies; subject to His wrath 2.God provided a way of salvation: The Gospel- Death, Burial, & Resurrection of Christ (1 Cor. 15:1-7) 3.They must respond to the Gospel on God’s terms 1.They must see their need for the Gospel. You shall not commit adultery Jesus says lust is adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28) You shall not lie Even a “little white lie”! If you believe you have no sin (1 Jn 1:8, 10) WE ARE SINFUL You shall not steal Have you done this? even something small? You shall not kill Have you murdered someone? Jesus says hate is murder in the heart! (Matthew 5:21- 22; 1 jn 3:15) You shall not take the name of the lord your god in vain Have you ever used God’s name disrespectfully? Oh my G_ _ Euphemisms? Geez, Gosh, Golly This is called Blasphemy
Are you standing before the Lord right now as: A Lying Thief? A Blasphemer? A murderer and adulterer at heart? WE ARE SINFUL God says: Liars, idolaters, & murderers will have their place in the lake of fire (Rev 21:8) Adulterers, fornicators, drunkards, thieves, and the covetous will not inherit the kingdom (1 Cor. 6:9-10)
Enemies of God! God’s wrath abides on the sinner (John 3:36; Psalm 5:4-5) If the sinner dies as an enemy of God, they will be condemned to Hell (the second death, Rev 20:14)
A Desperate Situation We have broken the laws of the God of the universe. Because of this we are God’s enemies and subject to the wrath of a Holy God if we die in this condition. We find ourselves in a very desperate situation:
Jesus Christ! God gave us a way to pay the price for sin!
Saved from God’s Wrath Romans 5:8-10 God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
JUSTIFICATION (Penalty Removed/Declared Righteous)JUSTIFICATION SANCTIFICATION (Sins Removed – Made Holy) SANCTIFICATION (Sins Removed – Made Holy) JESUS’SACRIFICEJESUS’SACRIFICE RESULTS IN RECONCILIATION (No Longer an Enemy of God)RECONCILIATION RESULTS IN we have been sanctified we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:10 Romans 3:23-25 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. Colossians 1:22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation
Resurrection! He defeated sin and death by the resurrection The resurrection proves: All that Jesus’ claims are true He is our sacrifice! He will be our judge! He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead." (Acts 17:31)
What Must I do to be saved? (Born Again) We need God’s answer! He gives it in Acts 2
Acts 2: The 1 st Gospel Sermon When Peter preached to the crowd on the day of Pentecost, they believed the gospel and were convicted of their sin. They asked the Apostles: “Men and Brethren, What shall we do?” (Acts 2:37) How did Peter answer this question?
Did Peter answer by saying.. You were born into the church Just believe. Say 5 “Hail Mary’s” or go to your priest Pray the sinners prayer. Accept Jesus into your heart. Do good works DIFFERENTGOSPELS (Gal 1:8-9) DIFFERENT GOSPELS (Gal 1:8-9)
Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins ; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit Peter’s answer... The GOSPEL RESPONSE
