2 Your Guidance Counselor I have lived in Darke County my entire life (New Madison, Arcanum, Greenville) I have been a Guidance Counselor since 2011. I graduated from the University of Dayton with a Master’s in School Counseling. I have been married for 4 years, and I have a daughter, Eleanor, who is almost a year old. I love helping students navigate the choices that high school and college presents.

4 Graduation Requirements for Classes of 2014 and Beyond English4 credits Math4 credits (must include 1 unit of Algebra II or the equivalent of Algebra II) Physical Education½ credit Health½ credit Science3 credits (1 Biology, 1 Physical and 1 unit advanced study in one or more of the following sciences) Social Studies 91 credit Social Studies 101 credit Government1 credit Fine Arts1 credit Electives7 credits 23 CREDITS TOTAL

5 Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) Taken for first time in March of sophomore year Need to pass in order to graduate (Reading, Math, Writing, Science, Social Studies) If a part of the OGT test is not passed, students have an opportunity to retake the test: -Twice during the junior year -Twice during the senior year -Once in the summer between the sophomore/ junior years -Once during the summer between the junior/senior years

6 Important Information Regarding Registration: Schedule Changes: Students can get their schedules in early August, and changes should be made before school begins (this avoids chaos once school begins). Students have three days to add/drop classes after the semester begins. Schedules will not be changed the first day of each semester so that students have an opportunity to experience the class. A student who fails a course will be rescheduled into that course whenever possible. Taking two classes in one year of math, science, or English will not be permitted, unless permission is received from the instructor and counselor.

7 High School Academic Diploma with Honors Graduating Classes of 2011 and Beyond Students need to fulfill only 7 of the following 8 criteria 1. English4 credits 2. Math4 credits Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or equivalent and another higher level course OR a four-year sequence of courses that contain equivalent content 3. Science4 credits including Physics and Chemistry 4. Social Studies4 credits 5. Foreign Language3 credits/ units of one language 6. Fine Arts1 credit 7. 3.5 GPA 8. 27 ACT or 1210 SAT

9 College-Prep Curriculum Need to have at least C average in English to take Spanish I and English 9 CP Will look at grades at end of third nine weeks and can adjust schedule if grade criteria is not met Sometimes difficult to mix & match college prep and non-college prep/elective courses

11 RECOMMENDED FOUR-YEAR PLAN FOR COLLEGE-PREP PROGRAM CONTINUED… ELEVENTH: Algebra II English 11 CP Chemistry I Chemistry II Social Psychology Spanish III Electives TWELFTH: Pre-Calculus English 12 CP American Government Physics I Physics II Electives **Accelerated math students take calculus in the 12 th grade. Other students may double up math courses in grade 12.

12 Freshman Electives: Agriculture Classes Art I Web Design and Word Processing Managing Transitions/Financial Management Band Choir All electives are worth one credit, except for Advanced PE (junior/senior elective). This class is worth ½ credit. Depending on class numbers, you may not always get the (elective) class you choose.

13 Special Need Students IEP will follow you in high school. Can still take regular education classes Special education teacher will have input into schedule Testing accommodation for the OGT will be provided as stated on the IEP.

14 Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Eligible to apply sophomore year (after Christmas break) Sophomore tour/visitation Will still graduate as an Ansonia student Can still participate in Ansonia athletics and other activities Transportation to and from MVCTC is provided Programs are available for students of various academic abilities.

15 Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program A great opportunity for high academic achieving, disciplined students to earn college credit while in high school. To qualify: All students must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 high school GPA (3.0 in a subject area). Incoming freshmen and sophomores: score an 18 for English and/or a 22 for math on the ACT. Incoming juniors and seniors: same ACT testing option, OR achieve college-level reading/writing or math in Edison's COMPASS placement assessment. Underclassmen must take a minimum of 3.2 credits per semester. Seniors must take a minimum of 3.0 credits per semester. Failed classes must be paid for by student. (currently $401.88 for a 3 credit hour class)

16 NCAA College Freshman Eligibility Standards NCAA Division I has a sliding scale for test score requirements and GPA. For example, a student with a higher GPA can earn a lower score on the ACT/SAT and maintain NCAA eligibility. If you would like to see the sliding scale, see me afterwards. NCAA Division II has a GPA requirement of 2.0. Also, DII has a minimum SAT score requirement of 820 and an ACT sum score of 68. -SAT score includes only the critical reading and math sections -ACT sum score includes English, math, reading and science
