IYPT Summary and Challenge Initiation Des Duthie, Kent Hogan & Kerry Parker

In 10 minutes What is IYPT? The challenges for the 1 st New Zealand Institute of Physics Education Section Physics Battle

What is IYPT? International Young Physicist’s Tournament Teams of 5 students from around 25 countries Annual Mid-year Croatia 2008, China 2009…. Te Patuki o nga Hinengaro Ahupungao Tournament for NZ schools Teams of 3 students enter regional tournaments with national finals in March.

6 months to solve 7 problems

1 st New Zealand Institute of Physics Education Section Teachers’ Physics Battle 3 problems in 2 weeks Emptying the bottle The rate at which liquid empties from an upside-down bottle can be change by quickly ‘moving’ the bottle to make the liquid inside the bottle rotate. Investigate this phenomenon. Optical water pipe-line A vessel is filled with liquid (e.g. water). The jet flows out in the bottom of the vessel. The light source is placed so, that the horizontal beam of light falls into the water jet. Find the conditions which provide the jet to operate like a light guide. Candle on the wind Estimate the minimal speed of wind which can blow out the flame of a candle?

1 st New Zealand Institute of Physics Education Section Teachers’ Physics Battle Reporter Report – Contents Report – Presentation Discussion - physical correctness of the report - relevance of the discussed arguments for the task - correct, evident and logical application of scientific methods - experimental and theoretical approach - correct models (e.g. conformity of dimensions) - understandable conclusions based on the presentation - evident structure - understandable explanation of formulae, symbols, etc. - clear and understandable - visual material - clear speech - scientific correctness (references, etc.) - physical correctness - relevance of the arguments - appropriate and solid knowledge of basic physics - objective arguments - response to the objections of opponent -good and respectful etiquette - final statement & jury-questions -Extra points for Kiwi ingenuity (0-2) Total (max of 10)x3 Opponent Questions / Presentation Discussion - relevance of the questions - physical correctness - clear and understandable - shows weak points of the report - physical correctness - relevance of the arguments - appropriate and solid knowledge of basic physics - objective arguments keeping to the facts of the report - good and respectful etiquette - final statement & jury-questions Total (max of 10)x2 5 person Judging Panel Reporter Report – Contents Report – Presentation Discussion - physical correctness of the report - relevance of the discussed arguments for the task - correct, evident and logical application of scientific methods - experimental and theoretical approach - correct models (e.g. conformity of dimensions) - understandable conclusions based on the presentation - evident structure - understandable explanation of formulae, symbols, etc. - clear and understandable - visual material - clear speech - scientific correctness (references, etc.) - physical correctness - relevance of the arguments - appropriate and solid knowledge of basic physics - objective arguments - response to the objections of opponent -good and respectful etiquette - final statement & jury-questions -Extra points for Kiwi ingenuity (0-2) Total (max of 10)x3 5 person Judging Panel
